system freeze when any video is displayed

Post by asrock1 »

Hello,

System info below. Randomly, my PC will freeze when either a video file is started ( I use VLC ), or a video on a webpage is played (I sure firefox or chromium ). Its not a condition I could replicate on demand - could happen after 5 minutes, or a few hours. A reboot is required. PC is clean inside and has good ventilation. My gut tells me its related to the GPU built into the processor, but its so random i am not certain. "Freeze" meaning input from keyboard or mouse has no effect, but mouse cursor still moves freely. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time.

Hi asrock1, and welcome to the forum. There's an issue with the 5.3.0-53 kernel and Ryzen/amdgpu setups. Boot to an earlier kernel in the grub menu, and the issue may disappear.

See this link for details: viewtopic.php?f=46&t=320149

Thank you MrEen. Ill read up on this. Would you know if installing a dedicated video card bypass this issue?

As long as it doesn't use the amdgpu driver, I would assume it would.

But this is just a kernel bug that should get fixed soon I would think.
