The way to run Chromium with hardware acceleration on Mint 20

Post by Sraw »

First, we need the Chromium with hardware acceleration support, use the following PPA:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:saiarcot895/chromium-beta
Before you do sudo apt install chromium-browser, we need to first pin the PPA. Create a file named chromium.pref under /etc/apt/preferences.d. Add the following content in:

Code: Select all

Package: *
Pin: release o=LP-PPA-saiarcot895-chromium-beta
Pin-Priority: 800
Now we can install the Chromium:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt install chromium-browser
It is almost done, with the only one step left. On Mint 20, the intel driver is changed to iHD, which is not supported by the current build, we need to use the older i965 driver. Edit the configuration of the Chromium /etc/chromium-browser/default, add the following content in:

Code: Select all

export LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=i965
