No sound through headphones [SOLVED]
I'd just installed Mint 20 MATE 64-bit on a Dell Inspiron 15 3000, dual boot along side of Windows 10. The headphones work fine in Windows and my tablet. I tried playing Pandora through Firefox, which had worked when I played it through the USB Live. Then I tried Rhythmbox. Neither worked through headphones, though the speakers worked fine. I also had no system sounds through Pidgin or Thunderbird or anything else.
I read an article that suggested installing pavocontrol (sp?) and tried that and suddenly I had sound! Then, after rebooting, no sound again. I fiddled with the Sound and PulseAudio Volume Control to no avail.
Would anyone be so kind as to tell this Mint newbie how I can get my sound back? Thanks for your help.

Re: No sound through headphones
It might be as simple as adjusting your sound settings. Go to Menu. Under Applications, choose Sound & Video and then Sound. I've experienced no sound when the incorrect settings were selected.

Re: No sound through headphones
Thanks, but no go. I'd tried that, plus the PulseAudio Volume Control. Everything was enabled and appeared to be working, just no sound.

Hi wayfarer51, and welcome to the forum.
Play a song or video with the headphones plugged in and run
Those should give us a clue.
Play a song or video with the headphones plugged in and run
pacmd list-sinks
in the terminal. Paste that output, along with the output of pacmd list-cards
and dmesg | grep snd
Those should give us a clue.

OK, MrEen, done and done. I'm glad you can interpret all of this. I've been hanging out in Windows so I can listen to music while I fool around on the laptop when what I'd really like is to be fixing up Mint to suit me.
Thanks so much!

Re: No sound through headphones
This is a tricky one. First, in the terminal run
I'm doubting that's going to fix this, but your outputs look so good otherwise. There isn't a switch or volume control on the headphones, is there?
Also, if this is a dual boot with Windows, boot to Windows and ensure Fast Startup is turned off then shutdown, don't reboot. Wait 2 minutes then power up into Mint and see if the headphones work.
alsamixer
. Arrow over to the Headphone Mic column, then press the m key to mute it. Muted columns show MM at the bottom.I'm doubting that's going to fix this, but your outputs look so good otherwise. There isn't a switch or volume control on the headphones, is there?

Re: No sound through headphones
I ran alsamixer and cursored to the headphones column. Pressing "M" so it read "MM", exiting alsamixer, rebooting back into Mint: no sound from headphones. There was no apparent change to the alsamixer screen after unmuting headphones either.
This is a dual boot with Windows 10, so I checked Fast Startup and it was off. I remembered I'd turned it off years ago because I didn't want the laptop hibernating. I did a complete shutdown anyway (at this point I'm waving dead chickens at the moon), waited a few minutes and booted back into Mint. Still no headphone sound. No switch for the headphones, unfortunately.
I still think it's weird that the only times I've had headphone sound in Mint was the USB Live test of Mint 19, and then after I installed pavucontrol. When I rebooted after the pavucontrol was installed, no headphone sound again.
Thanks for sticking with this, it means a lot to me.

Re: No sound through headphones
Okay, you've given me an idea. Boot to the Live USB, and make sure the headphones are working. Assuming so, run
sudo alsactl store
followed by cat /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
Paste the output here, then I'll have you insert it into your installed OS.Re: No sound through headphones
And just to note you're at least the second person, probably the third, that's had an issue with the newer pavucontrol causing issues.

Re: No sound through headphones
OK, here is the output. Using Mint 20 Mate 64-bit Live USB and playing Pandora on Firefox, sound on headphones is definitely working.
Fingers crossed.

Re: No sound through headphones
Great. Now you have a copy of that here.
Boot back into your installed version. Run
Boot back into your installed version. Run
sudo touch /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
followed by xed admin:///var/lib/alsa/asound.state
. If there's anything in the file, delete it, then paste in what you posted above. After saving the file, run sudo alsactl restore
then test the headphones.-

Re: No sound through headphones
It worked!
As soon as I ran the restore the headphone sound came right on! MrEen, you're amazing! Knowledge AND patience in one person.
Thanks for all your invaluable help. I want to put a SOLVED on the topic header, but I've got to run now for a bit. I'll be back in an hour or so.
Thanks again.

Fantastic!
In the future, if the headphones stop working again, try the same restore command. I suspect it will work, even months from now.
