How to Change BIOS to UEFI and convert Disk to GPT (Solved)

Post by cynicpink »

Hi All. I have an old Motherboard Z77MX-D3H which is dual Bios but has been setup as Legacy. I bought a new Graphics card (Sapphire RX 580 Pulse) which I didn't realise was USEFI only. My set up is Dual boot Win 7 with Mint 19.3. Can I change the Linux Partition to GPT without reinstalling all my data? Thanks for any help :)

In one word or less, no.

I would be very surprised if the video card is EFI only. What led you to that conclusion?

1. The card won't display at all in my system even tho the fans spin and it's obviously getting power.
2. I bought a new Seasonic "Focus" Gold 750w PSU because I thought it may be a power issue. Still no.
3. It's written on the box.
4. The card works in a newer system which is UEFI.

Thanks for your reply :)

This is not going to be an easy fix. I found this link - https://www.rojtberg.net/1032/convertin ... n-to-uefi/ - which is old, but should still work.
Mint 19.3 XFCE
kernel 5.4.0-42-generic
Ryzen 7 2700X Eight-Core w/16 GB RAM
AMD Radeon R9 290 w/4GB RAM
GeForce GTX 1050 Ti w/2GB RAM (for FAH)

I share Kadaitcha Man's doubts about your current "legacy" BIOS-MBR (CSM) mode booting being the source of your video issue. Just because some other OS that boots in UEFI mode gives different results isn't grounds for attributing the difference to the boot mode. Have you tried booting the LM "live" installation media in UEFI mode to see if that produces a correct visual display. If not, then changing your system's boot mode isn't the solution and you'd be well advised to avoid the many potential pitfalls involved in any conversion attempt.

Thank you for the replies. I bought the card from a computer shop and was told by the guy who sold me the card that he tested it in his system and it worked so it must be my system, possibly because mine is in Legacy mode not UEFI.

From what I've read here, it looks like wiping the drive would be easiest. Also good point that maybe it's not the problem.

You might check your BIOS settings and make sure secure boot is off.
