Upgrade 19.3 -> 20 Cannot play videos

Post by Dave Albiston »

After upgrade VLC plays audio as normal but if I try to open a video it disappears down the plug hole. Starting Celluloid just displays a transparent window for a few seconds before disappearing.

Where do I start?

inxi output attached.

What video file format(s)? I no longer have VLC after a fresh LM 20 install, but Celluloid works fine (both video and sound) for all of my MP4s and even for a stray Windows WMV, although the auto-start seems to vary slightly. I see that you're using Intel UHD Graphics and mine's a NVIDIA card which would seem possibly to imply differential issue origins in the hardware and/or drivers involved.

How deep is a hole?

The codecs seem to be as good a place to start as any.

Try sudo apt install mint-meta-codecs

If it complains that it's already installed, try sudo apt install --reinstall mint-meta-codecs

I'm sure rene would be appalled at that suggestion.

Kadaitcha Man

Thanks for the response - really quick!

I re-installed the codecs but no change. I've tried to open .mov and .mp4 files but no success.
