Linux Mint 19.3, Intel 3945ABG, no wifi connection

Post by LenR61 »

Hi guys, I have installed Linux Mint 19.3 on my old Lenovor61 and noticed, that it is unable to establish a wifi connection. Updates have brought no effects in this regard. General tips didn't work for me and I haven't found topics relating this laptop model/wlan card.
So, you are my last hope )))
Is it any chance to connect this old baby to a wifi? I would appreciate very much any helpful hints and ideas.

Here are some details:

Try:

Code: Select all

 sudo modprobe iwl3945

If nothing:

Code: Select all

 sudo ifconfig wls3 up

Hey Sleeper12, thanks for the ideas! Today I found your answer and tried both options and nothing happened. After entering came only the terminal start line:

xm@xm-ThinkPad-T61:~$ sudo modprobe iwl3945
xm@xm-ThinkPad-T61:~$ sudo ifconfig wls3 up
xm@xm-ThinkPad-T61:~$

What else can I try to solve the issue?

Is there a hardware switch on the laptop or a Fn key combination to enable/disable the WLAN adaptor? My old ASUS F3Sr which had the same WLAN module as yours had one.

You could try the 4.15 kernel. Install it in Update Manager, View, Linux kernels, then boot into it in Grub, Advanced Options.

Thanks, yeah, indeed I have a switch and it is all the time on. I tried already to switch it off and on. Still no wifi.
The wlan module is neither soft nor hard blocked.

do what sleeper says then, try older kernels starting with 4.19 if available. the adaptor still seems to be supported by iwl but it is entirely possible that it does not play nicely with kernel 5.4 power management optimisations. you may need to go back to 4.14 LTS or 4.9 LTS if Mint offers them as options. I'm currently using LMDE so cannot see what the Linux Mint main edition Kernel options are.

Hey Sleeper, thank you! The 4.15 kernel was already installed in the OS so I booted with the 4.15 kernel and tried to connect to the router. I noticed as well today that the wlan module has 802.11 a/b/g standard and my router is operating in 802.11n. So I changed the router to 802.11 b/g/n. The result is now at the first sight better than before: it seems to be connected according to the status sign in the panel, the wlan light is now on and is blinking, but I can't open any web site. After a while (I see that the browser is trying to connect) appears regularly an error message "Server not found...". I tried to connect the laptop to a mobile hotspot. Same result: connected but "Server not found".

Any other ideas what can help?

try a different channel number for the wlan (again router config), older devices can be picky about the wlan channel

You can try # 2.1 & 2.2 here:

Thanks Sleeper! 2.1 and 2.2 done, still no wifi.

In the iwconfig (s. below) I noticed two lines saying about no wireless extensions. Is it ok?

humour me, if you are not on a capped internet plan try downloading the lmde4 ISO and see if you can get the wireless working with that please. you don't need to install it, just run the live environment from the booted ISO and you will be able to tell from that.

This worked for someone in an old thread, so see if it works for you:

Code: Select all

echo "options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
sudo modprobe -rfv iwlwifi
sudo modprobe -v iwlwifi

Hi guys, the last suggestion brought unfortunately also no effect on the connectivity. I tried with lmde4 as a live session and it worked. Only the wifi light was off. So I think I change to lmde4. Many thanks for your time and help!
