Wifi not working with Intel PRO/Wireless 4965

Hi guys.
I am a new user in the linux world..
Recently i'have got a old pc and windows 7 was heavier for that so i have decided to install linux on my pc.

Firstly i install lubuntu..
But after installation i can't get any network access. I can connect to the wifi but there is no internet coming from that..Other devices are working fine with that same wifi connection.I have tried a lot of things but i could not able to solve that.

So i thought i will install kali linux.
But after install kali linux i was like what is this!!? Even i cant install an app without any command. That os is for very highly professional people. Still i wanted to stick with kali linux because it was running smoothly. And i will just use 2 application. One is Atom(an ide for programmin) and chrome. But after that i found another problem that was slow network. So i tried to solve that.I posted the problem in a facebook group which is about kali but they heavily criticised me!.
Still i found some solution in google. And i understand that it was for network repository. I changed that also added dns etc. But still i couldn’t fix that.


Then i heard linux mint is the best for new user who are used to with windows.
So i had some question and i need answer of them before switching to another os.

** Do linux mint have any network related problem? Like slow internet and not having any internet at all?
**And can a windows user operate linux mint?

Linux Mint doesn't have any networking issues of its own. But it might be the case the specific network device your system has is badly supported by its manufacturer on Linux and your specific network device doesn't have a good driver. Such may require some other driver to be installed or making some change to system configuration to make it work fully.

Others can advise on this but they would need to know the exact network device and Linux recognizes it. It'd suggest you do the following:

1. download Linux Mint 20 and make a bootable USB stick from it (the installation guide provides help with this https://linuxmint-installation-guide.re ... /burn.html);
2. boot your system from the USB stick so you can try out Linux mint live on your system without installing;
3. try out the wifi from there and if it works, great! you can go ahead and install;
4. if it doesn't work temporarily connect your system with a network cable and see if that works instead as this will be very helpful in the next step;
5. if with the network cable attached you have working internet, open System Reports from the menu and go to System Information and click the Copy button there to copy some basic information about your hardware—then reply here and paste the copied information;
6. with that information others can likely answer what the problem with your wifi device is on Linux.

I should think so. It should look familiar and you should quickly find your way around what is where.

yes, test driving a bootable live mint will show you any issues you may have with the os. as far as finding drivers and installing and making them work, the people here will pull as much hair out as needed to help you get things fixed! (i wonder how many bald people are on here) absolutely fabulous people here to help you. you just need to ask.

So i tried ubuntu mint..

And i tried

"Ping google.com"
Ping : google.com: Name or service not known

Then i tried:-
nslookup google.com
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached


What should i do now?

Actually i dont have any network cable at this moment to work.But i do manage to copy the information and make a text file then copy the Text file to my android phone.Here is what i copied:-

I read a lot of issues for that chip with Linux. To confirm the same issue, run this command:
dmesg | grep iwl
Does it show any messages about firmware not loading or not being found?

Sounds like another issue. Hopefully somebody else can suggest what else to try for iwl4965 driver not letting you connect to servers.

Update:- I have connected my phone to the laptop and tried to use usb tethering.

And it did work..Network is working with usb tethering i can browse any site or ping any website..What to do now to get a working wifi solution?

Looking through other iwl4965 issues in this forum I stumbled upon something that looks related. Apparently for this chip the 802.11n is very unreliably and it's better to disable it.

Try the following:
1. Disconnect the phone tethering.
2. Run these two commands to unload the iwl4965 driver and then reload it with 802.11n disabled:

sudo modprobe -v iwl4965 11n_disable=1

3. See if you can now connect to your wifi network and that browsing works.

It those steps work, you can after installing Linux Mint make that a permanent setting with this command (applies it upon each boot):

Glad it worked.

After you have installed Linux Mint to your computer and logged in to the new install, you just need to run the above command once. It creates a configuration file that sets this option for you automatically each time you start Linux Mint. After that's done reboot to activate the change or one last time run these two commands (which set this option until you reboot the system):
