New computer. Mint 20 "Check your video drivers"

Brand new to all of this.

I switched from a Toshiba Satellite to an ASUS, installed Mint 20.

Could not boot. Booted in recovery mode and saw the warning

Check your video drivers
Your system is currently running without video hardware acceleration.
You may experience poor performance and high CPU usage.

I launched the Driver Manager and switched from xserver-xorg-video-nouveau to nvidia-driver-440.

I restarted and was able to boot, but the warning

Check your video drivers

is still there. I've spent about a week trying to figure this out, but I have to admit defeat on this one and ask people who actually know what they're doing.

I have a 15ARE05 / 81X2 as well with a 4500U running Mint 20.04 and resolved this message by installing the amdgpu drivers.

To download the drivers don't drill down to Ryzen 5 Mobile with Radeon Graphics -> 4500U as you'll only find W10 drivers. Instead, just find any current consumer graphics card and look for the Ubuntu drivers (amdgpu-pro-20.20-1098277-ubuntu-20.04.tar.xz):

Current version is 20.20 from what I can tell. This got rid of the driver message for me and the graphics seem a little better and snappier. Unfortunately, and I can't tell if this was a pre-driver problem or not, I have weird issues with adjusting the brightness where the screen will blank out well before hitting minimum brightness so I have to raise it a notch then keep going down again to lower brightness.

I doubt these drivers even have much if anything for Renoir but it at least adds some AMD stuff to your kernel to make it think proper drivers are installed. Otherwise it is stable, runs well, and no driver message on boot. As has been said, this CPU/architecture is so new there will definitely be some latency when comparing its to functionality in Windows. For example, Tails linux can't even boot on Renoir based CPUs yet (this includes Ryzen 4000s):

I followed your link, but I had not been successful, so when the second suggestion came in, I followed that one.

The result was me reinstalling entirely. Again, I'm very new at this.

User ficus2 in this topic has the same Ryzen 7 4800H CPU as you do, which is very new hardware which I just found out had a launch date on 1-6-20. He had to install the 5.7.1 kernel for better support:

You can install Ukuu to make the kernel installation easier. The latest version of Ukuu now requires purchasing a license for $11, but you can get an older version here:

Download the ukuu-v18.9.1-amd64.deb file. Install the 5.7.1 kernel. Reboot and select the new kernel at the grub menu. When you get to the desktop, post the output of inxi -Gx

Sorry about the delay. My computer, for whatever reason, stopped charging. I handed it back to the people at ASUS, and they repaired it under warranty. Took them a week. Not terrible. They said that they "replaced the motherboard".

At any rate, it seems that all problems have been solved by switching to this new kernel. My HDMI cable connects to my second monitor, and I no longer get Driver Manager warnings.

The amdgpu driver is now loading and driving the integrated AMD GPU. If you are satisfied with using just that for graphics rendering, then this topic is finished. However, if you want to be able to switch to the more powerful Nvidia GPU in situations where more graphics processing power is needed, then some additional configuration is needed.

Follow the instructions in my second post in this topic. This is the same topic I listed in my first post, but you could not use them until the graphics hardware acceleration problem was resolved:

In your first post, the Nvidia 440.100 driver was installed but now the 440.95.01 is listed, which doesn’t exist.

In particular, both the amdgpu and nvidia drivers are loading, and OpenGL is using the nvidia card.

I am plugging in my external monitor by HDMI, and both the external and the built-in monitors appear to be working. The Displays config gives me plenty of resolution choices for both monitors.

Did you try using the desktop script to switch GPUs. Your system is using the Nvidia GPU for the graphics rendering now. This is also needed because the HDMI port is usually internally connected to that GPU. If you don’t need to use an external monitor and don’t require the greater graphics processing power of the Nvidia GPU, then you should switch back to the AMD GPU for graphics rendering. This will keep laptop temperatures down and help prevent overheating problems.

You don’t need to switch back to the integrated AMD GPU with your setup. If that changes in the future, then this post has the instructions:

Also, I just noticed that your inxi output lists the BusID as 6 for the AMD GPU and you correctly changed the value in the xorg.conf file. The value has been 5 for all other users except it was 7 for one user.
