[ SOLVED]Ongoing Issue Mint 20 cinnamon new Install system non restart after suspend
This is an ongoing issue and I have tried a few things.
It began on Mint 19.3 so I went for a new install of 20. Both worked for a while and now the same problem. It is a desktop.
If I set it to blank monitor from system menu, the monitor will not shut down.
If I set the computer to suspend after a period of time it will not restart and I have to switch it off and the on.
I have tried a suggestion of " sudo dconf write /org/mate/power-manager/sleep-display-ac 05", it writes the entry but says it lacks a schema, not sure what that means.
I would be very happy to either have the two monitors switch off or the computer to suspend and then restart.
Any ideas???

First you have to create that schema using a gsettings command I think... I've seen this somewhere on another topic, but I can't remember now... let me look for it.
Re: On Going Issue Mint 20 cinnamon new Install system non restart after suspend
Can anyone point me in the direction of information about the suspend function in Mint or shutting down the monitors?
I no where the graphical settings are, I think I will need to adjust the base settings in some way, I just don't know where to start or where to find the info to start.

You said you are using Cinnamon but you used the Mate power manager to change settings?
Can you post:
from the command line. Maybe it will give us a hint.
Can you post:
Code: Select all
xset q
Re: On Going Issue Mint 20 cinnamon new Install system non restart after suspend
That would explain why it didn't work.
Will post when I am able.

Re: On Going Issue Mint 20 cinnamon new Install system non restart after suspend
They are indeed interesting as I have the same setting, so it looks normal. I would definitely only choose one power manager and in your case it should be from Cinnamon. Because if you use more than one it messes things up.
Is mate-power-manager installed on your system?
We can have a quick look:
If it is I would remove it and adjust the settings from Cinnamon. And maybe then we can fix the other issue, too.

Re: Ongoing Issue Mint 20 cinnamon new Install system non restart after suspend
It is not installed. I just wondered why you tried to use a dconf option in your original post.
What are your actual settings for power management and also post your hardware info.

Re: Ongoing Issue Mint 20 cinnamon new Install system non restart after suspend
I used that command purely because it was the only suggestion I could get as to what to try.
It is actually difficult to find information about suspend mode and monitor functions.

Re: Ongoing Issue Mint 20 cinnamon new Install system non restart after suspend
That could be very well sometimes the problem, following random commands on the internet.
I see you have one of those newer Ryzen models I have no experience with. Not sure if it could be related to that. I think I have to pass, sorry.
Did you try to install additional drivers?

Re: Ongoing Issue Mint 20 cinnamon new Install system non restart after suspend
None were recommended; and both functions worked initially and then didn't.
I was using 19.3 for months without a hassle and then suspend and monitor sleeping just stopped working. I was unable to fix it using timeshift to go back to before the problem. I thought installing 20 would fix it and it seemed to. Then after a week or so it too had the same problems. This time I thought I will just do a fresh install, the fresh install had the problem for the moment it started.
I really like Mint cinnamon but I am not prepared to put up with this for months/years.
I will, when I get time try mate and xfce. Failing that other distros I guess.
The other 2 machines I am running Mint 20 on are working perfectly without a hitch, so very frustrating that my main workhorse computer is not working properly. yes I do think it is the newness of the machine, sadly it works flawlessly with windows so for the moment that may be my fallback OS.
I would love if there was somewhere to find out about how suspend and the monitor off features of the distribution work but I can find very little.
Thank you for your time. It is starting to look like a problem that no one can help with.

Re: Ongoing Issue Mint 20 cinnamon new Install system non restart after suspend
Maybe it won't help but you could try Mint 20 with something else than Cinnamon. I know Cinnamon is a lot nicer. But that way we could see if the desktop environment is the issue. Cinnamon needs 3D acceleration whereas the other two do not.
Re: Ongoing Issue Mint 20 cinnamon new Install system non restart after suspend
Makes sense have just installed mate, give it a while though because cinnamon worked initially.
Re: Ongoing Issue Mint 20 cinnamon new Install system non restart after suspend
Well after a week of using mate I can say it works as it supposed to.
The monitors switch off and the computer goes into suspend and then restarts when the keyboard is pressed.
I must say Mate does not seem enormously different to Cinnamon.
After listening to Mintcast I have been thinking it may well be teething problems with Cinnamon on this piece of hardware. So for this week I will try Cinnamon again, making sure all updates are installed.

Re: Ongoing Issue Mint 20 cinnamon new Install system non restart after suspend
I have been running cinnamon 20 since the weekend, 4 days and so far in working perfectly so I will mark this as solved.
