Tricia to Ulyana killed Samsung C1860FW network printer

Post by what-the-hal »

I upgraded from Tricia to Ulyana. My wifi home networked Samsung C1860FW does not print, but my Canon G3200 does. Initially, I was getting some kind of error that a CUPS file was missing but unfortunately didn't record the error. I purged CUPS and reinstalled it; the error went away. I used the GUI Print Manager to delete the Samsung and re-find and add the Samsung, which it does. No print. I installed the latest Linux driver from the Samsung (HP, now that they bought out Samsung printers division) website, no print. The Samsung prints fine from my iPhone or Android, so the printer and network are fine. Sending from my notebook after the Ulyana upgrade, the Printer Queue shows either no file, a zero (0) bytes file, or the file is ON HOLD and won't release in the queue. Those variables depend on which driver I try to use (Samsung, CUPS driverless, or ipp-related file that the Print Manager finds).

Why don't you edit the subject of your initial post. As things stand, readers will be at least as confused as you which might be partly why no support has been forthcoming so far. Once you have done that, my post becomes superfluous but it will have bumped your issue to the start of the section.

Good luck, I hope one of the forum experts will help you resolve your issue.

We will deal with this printer, then. But not by debugging use of the Samsung drivers (ULD).
The Samsung prints fine from my iPhone or Android, ...
Which implies it should fit the Mint printing system.

Please give the outputs of

And just so it's clear, the printer doesn't print with a USB cable connected, either. It never sees a file in the print queue.

This is a URI. Substitute for it in

Code: Select all

lpadmin -p c1860 -v URI -E -m everywhere
and test with

Code: Select all

lp -d c1860 /etc/nsswitch.conf

Sorry for the delay in the reply. I had essentially given up trying to print from Mint, sending everything to my phone.
I don't know if my entry was correct in terminal but tried several times to assure I had no typo. Here's what I get back:

lpadmin: Bad printer URI "URI".

lpadmin: Bad printer URI "URI".
The URI is not "URI". You do not type "URI". It is a placeholder. Substitute
ipp://Samsung%20C1860%20Series%20(SEC842519069CE5)._ipp._tcp.local/
for it.

Put double quotes round the URI.

Code: Select all

I added quotes to the URI. Pressed enter and it went directly to ~$
Opened a document and sent to the printer.
At least now the document is loaded to the printer queue, but it sits in "processing" indefinitely and never prints.
I woke the printer up manually, just to make sure I had a printer ready signal (but that shouldn't be necessary).
Nevertheless, it's still not printing.
The bottom of the print manager window shows 'cups-ipp-conformance-failure-report' but I don't know how to get the report.
I thought maybe the nonconformance was the document, so I sent a PDF through, which always works from iPhone, etc.
The queue eventually clears when I cancel the "bad" document.
The PDF never even made it to the print queue.
