It happens while I'm using it too. The cursor will even still move but left button or right button won't do anything. Eventually the screen freezes and ctrl alt bkspc will take forever to go to start screen, sometimes I quit waiting.

This happens after you reboot the computer or after you might have suspended it?

I looked up the Logitech Wireless Mouse M325 (mentioned in your laptop info) and it says it runs off a unifying receiver. I've seen others posting on the forum they have had problems with resuming from suspend when using a Logitech unifying receiver. It's been a while since I read those threads so I don't recall if there were also problems before suspend or not. If you are using similar equipment for both the laptop and the desktop, then that might another common thread (in addition to the OS) between the two. That might also explain "usb error messages" you mention in your very first post.

the problem with USB mouse, is well known to me....

Did it on the laptop yesterday. So far so good. If it doesn't freeze I'm going to try it on my tower too, which just frozen a while ago while using it.

Ok, laptop made it through over a day and a half, so just did the tower. During reboot it threw up a ton of errors to do with USB but booted. How can I post the errors here so we can further make grub right for me? About 20 lines appears and went through usb errors because it started up.

The one without the numbers at the end is the most recent one, if that is what you mean by more than one. I just checked my boot.log for the first time. I usually check syslog files for troubleshooting, but that has a lot more than boot information (and I've not had boot troubles). Does your boot.log have info on USB errors?

sudo less boot.log and it shows a binary file, with quite perusal, I don't see what I am looking for.

My newest boot.log is a text file. I just typed sudo cat boot.log to view the contents (my file is not very long). My older boot.log files are binary, but not the newest one. Are all of your boot.log files binary?

I don't see any mention of USB in the boot.log file you posted. However, that file stops when the Login Service is started. Therefore, I would presume the errors are arising after logging in.

Some people have taken photographs of error messages and posted them. That is one option.

I would expect USB error messages would show in the syslog, but please do not post your syslog. Given that I don't know how these errors might manifest themselves, I don't even have a suggestion for using grep to get specific information because there are probably a number of usb related events which are not a problem. You might look at the time-stamp on the errors on you non-gui screen and go to that time in the log and do a cut and paste of those specific lines.

I have scrolled through my syslog looking for what might be usb related, but I don't normally have usb devices in my laptop at start-up/login. If you are not able to match the timestamp of errors on the non-gui screen to events in syslog, I suggest you take a photograph of the errors.

I may have fixed part of the problem in that I removed part of that line in grub. Booting up normal but there is one usb message, it flashes too quick to write it down.

Update: Laptop still sees slowdowns and lockups after about 12 hours of use. Tower seems ok, though has slowed down a couple times where to be safe, I rebooted.

It might indeed be the logitech mouse, but I don't have another mouse to use right now. It uses their unifying receiver.

On two different laptops, I ran into problems just like you describe when using Suspend, or Hibernate, or Sleep.

My solution, which has worked perfectly for me is to set each one of those to NEVER.

and Lid Closed to NOTHING.

that resolved all of my problems.

On the Laptop's power management, for Battery, Lid closed = Shutdown Immediately.

no more issues, at all.

On my big Gates Desktop in my office, I never do anything with it, just leave it running, and turn off the Monitor's Power.
it has been running that way for 12 years without any hiccups.

When I mentioned my Gates Desktop, I failed to mention it is running Windows 7.
so Linux has nothing to do with that one at all. Windows is so damn slow, that it is just easier to never turn the desktop off, leave it on, and it has never been a problem with it.

I probably should take the case off of it and blow out the dog hair and dust mites.

So I disconnected the Mouse for 24 hours and just used the touchpad and system seems ok. Mouse uses the Logitech unifying transceiver, it's a Logitech M325 Wireless Mouse.

Is there a way to play with drivers or are they built into the kernel?
