cinnamon does not start on boot

Post by afora »

Hi guys,

I can't find anything on the net on this specific issue I've been experiencing.

I have setup a tigervnc server on LAN which has been working well and I can remote desktop to it from other workstations on LAN. However, when I had to move the server off the LAN, I cannot seem to be able to start a DE on it. It remains on the black screen with the prompt. Here's what I've done.

1. Boot. It shows up a terminal with a tty1 prompt rather than the standard LM GUI login

Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia username tty1

username login:

2. Entering credentials

Last login: Thu Jul blah blah
0 packages can be updated
0 packages are security updates

3. Trying to start cinnamon

>cinnamon

Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused
Cinnamon error: Unable to open X display

I would really appreciate any help, as I now cannot use the server as a desktop computer.

Many thanks!

Did you install Mint specifically as a server? I don't think servers have desktops.
Currently: Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon 64-bit 4.6.6, AMD Ryzen5 + Geforce GT 710
Previously: LM20β, LM18.2

No, I have set it up as a standard LM 19.3 with cinnamon desktop.

Before I installed tigervnc it worked fine. There seems to be some configuration which disables a DE on the server completely, i.e. I cannot even output the sound after the remote VNC connection has been setup. It has something to do with a 'dummy' DE setup on the vnc server so if you remote to it and it does not have a monitor attached to it, it still shows a desktop to the VNC client.

Alas, I cannot use it with a physical monitor any longer.

Try startx rather than cinnamon

it gives me the following error stack:

Code: Select all

/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc: 3: exec: /usr/bin/X: not found
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error
same with or without sudo

Bumping up this question, as I am still struggling with finding a solution to this. I'm really stuck.

After the last kernel update, my very recent install of Mint 20 is doing the exact same thing.

I tried the Boot Repair utility. No help.

Anyone?
