[not solved] [sent back to owner] usb and TPM error messages during boot

Post by yonnie »

It works but bootup is very slow:
Error communicating to TPM chip (multiples of this error)
and
usb 3-11: device descriptor read/64, error -110

If I go into bios and set security the TPM message goes away but the usb error is still present. I don't want this security turned on, how do I turn it off?
And how do I get rid of the usb error?

The laptop is a ProBook 640. Installed LM 20 xfce yesterday. An earlier version of LM was on it and had no messages showing during boot, so this is a new problem.

Found this...

https://www.linuxquestions.org/question ... 175600294/
Regarding the -110 error, some folk on this thread https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1610142 advocate disconnecting the power supply to power down the port for a while before reconnecting again. Worth a try?
YES!

I powered off the machine, disconnected the power cable, waited five minutes, started the machine again and the errors are gone!

This has to be one of the oddest bugs I have ever encountered (except the ones in my own programs!).

This one is interesting...

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/136 ... -error-110
USB error -110 means "Timeout expired before the transfer completed", which could be caused by anything. Most commonly, it's because power was exceeded; the host could not provide enough electric power for the pendrive to operate. Because it has not enough power also the USB stick cannot provide the device descriptor to the host, as a result it cannot be identified and so on. Maybe your motherboard it's overloaded with devices that consume all the available power.
Just to add another data point: I was running into "error -110" messages for my Inateck dual bay USB 3.0 to SATA device (amazon link). This fixed it for me:
 • shutdown -h now (turn off the computer)
 • Unplug USB device from computer.
 • Unplug power cord to back of the computer.
 • Unplug power to Inateck - pull wall wart plug from wall socket.
 • Noticed there was a green glowing LED on the Inateck wall wart; waited for that to go dark.
 • Waited ~3min total.
 • Plugged everything back in and booted up.
Worked liked a charm.

Note: Previously I tried just unplugging the computer and letting it sit for a while; that didn't work. I had to unplug the USB from the computer and the usb device power adapter from the wall.

There's a lot of places that just say to enable or disable TPM in BIOS. But, this one talks about how to enable it.

Hopefully the USB error gets cleared using the method mentioned earlier. The only posts I've found so far are about enabling or disabling TPM in BIOS, and there's that one reference about fully enabling TPM in Linux.
 • If you've tried the USB error method, did it work?
 • Why do you want the TPM security disabled? Knowing this might be helpful in finding a solution.
 • If your bootup is very slow, are you looking for help with that too?
It might be useful to post some additional information about your system. Here;s the standard request for info:
 • Include the version and architecture (32-bit, 64-bit) of Linux Mint.
 • List any relevant hardware or software specifications. 'inxi' is a useful terminal command for listing this. Use inxi -h for help. Generally it suffices to type the following in terminal and include the output in your post -> inxi -Fxxxrz
 • List what Display Environment you are using if relevant (Cinnamon, KDE, XFCE, MATE, etc).
 • If you have output errors, list them in their entirety.
 • When posting output of commands use the "Code" tags if it is more than 2 or 3 lines long - this makes it more readable. The button that inserts these tags is marked </>
 • If your Linux Mint installation isn't in English, prefix any commands that you want to share output of with LC_ALL=C. That forces output to be English. For example instead of running the command "make", you'd run the command "LC_ALL=C make".
Next, it would be good to see what is causing the delays in the boot sequence. I'll provide some instructions or information in my next post.

Now, to start looking at your slow boot problem. Please post the results of...

Code: Select all

systemd-analyze
and

Code: Select all

systemd-analyze critical-chain
and

Code: Select all

systemd-analyze blame
Please be sure to post the output of the commands using the "Code" tags (if it is more than 2 or 3 lines long) - this makes it more readable. The button that inserts these tags is marked </>

I found the keyboard has a few keys that aren't working so I'm using a remote keyboard right now. Could the keyboard on the laptop be generating the usb error?
The TPM error message will go away if I use the bios security. That has never been turned on in the past. I'm thinking this laptop has a physical problem.

I've seen some weird keyboard problems (as a hobby, I repair and refurbish old laptops). Anything is possible. It could also be a problem with the circuitry that drives one of your USB ports, or even your camera (if you have one).

Let's take a look. Run this command in a terminal and post the results here. Use the "Code" tags to wrap the output when you post it - this makes it more readable. The button that inserts these tags is marked </>

I think this forum has some rules on the size of images (something like no larger than 100KB), and you have to place the files on an external internet server somewhere. I could be wrong, but that's my understanding.... :(

Re: usb and TPM error messages during boot

Post by Welcome »

One more please. (If you did this already, I must have missed it. I'll look again....)

Run this command in a terminal and post the results here. Use the "Code" tags to wrap the output when you post it - this makes it more readable. The button that inserts these tags is marked </>

Code: Select all

sudo lsusb -v
A lot to look at here, reviewing and searching now. Any idea what this is?

Re: usb and TPM error messages during boot

Post by Welcome »

I think we're missing part of that last lsusb -v, so let's try some easier commands. Could you please try these?

Code: Select all

lsusb
and

Code: Select all

lsusb -t
When you post the output here in the forum, select all of the output in the "Post A Reply" window and then click on </> icon just above the entry window. Or manually type
at the very beginning, and
at the very end. Check to make sure it works by clicking the Preview button before clicking the Submit button. It'll really help! Thanks!
