That's a good question! I threw it into my favourite web search engine, and it came back with this:

Your system will get slower if your drive is too full but nothing like WIndows.

Ive got the code for a terminal command for a defragger for linux but i refuse to post it knowing that some folks will screw up their systems with it...DAMIEN

That page has a very good explanation of the differences between Windows and Linux disk systems. Very interesting.

Several posts in this thread are just smug condescension and do not answer the question asked which was why Linux does not defrag. That attitude is not helpful in gaining converts as it tends to turn people away.
