I'm a noob with Linux, but I have installed it on old laptops in the past without too much trouble.

I recently had a hard drive failure on my main gaming pc which was still on windows 7 because I don't want windows 10. I replaced the hard drive and did a clean install of Mint 20. My aim was to give up windows completely, but I seem to be having no end of trouble with Mint 20 so far.

As you can see I have an I7 2600k, 16GB RAM, 750GB HDD, and two Nvidia GTX 970 in SLI

Within the first hour of use it locked up solid while watching YouTube. No keyboard or mouse response at all. I had to hold the power button to kill it.
I have installed the recommend Nvidia driver but I don't think its working properly as I still get intermittent screen tearing on web pages when scrolling.

I wanted to install steam and try running some games, and I did get Planet Coaster to run, but again after a few minutes the whole pc locked up. I tried downgrading the graphics driver from 450 to 390, but Planet coaster wouldn't load because it said it couldn't find DirectX. I upgraded the driver back to 450 and the game loaded but locked up the pc after a minute or two. It continues to randomly lock up, normally when doing something video/graphics related. I will say nothing seems slow or unresponsive. Even planet coaster ran smooth until the pc locked up.

I also had issues with my USB Blue Yeti microphone. It would default the sound output to the mic's output instead of the analogue line out, and would refuse to record audio at all, causing Audacity to crash. After much internetting I found that the mic won't work on a USB3 port but will work on a USB2 port in Linux. So that issue is kind of resolved, but still weird.

I also noticed in the crash reports that my keyboard seems to crash a lot ?! it's a wireless keyboard/mouse set made by Trust. I don't know if this is the cause of the lock ups, but I don't use the wireless mouse that came with the keyboard and use a corded Logitech mouse instead. When the PC locks up the corded mouse is unresponsive too. Here is the crash dump for the keyboard

Sometimes when it locks up there is a looping sound and other times not.

The only other crash report is from Audacity, but as I have fixed the issue with the mic only working on a USB2 port Audacity is working ok now.

My USB freeview tv tuner seems to mostly work using Kaffeine, but the HD channels don't seem to show up.

I also had a heap of issues copying files from my android phone over USB. It connected and I set it to file transfer mode, and tried to copy my photos over, but it got halfway through the first picture, reported the transfer speed at about 100kb/sec and said it would take 5 hours to copy 50 pictures. After a minute the transfer failed. After much unplugging and retrying I eventually got them to transfer as a decent speed. A little later I tried to send over some music, but again I had issues. I gave up and took the SD card out of the phone and used my USB card reader to copy the files over without an issue.

So overall my first 2 days with Linux Mint 20 have been quite testing.

I really want to get Davinci resolve installed too, but I have heard its not an easy task. So I will hold off on that until I have managed to get all the other issues ironed out.

I have no idea where to start with regards to the whole computer locking up, and would love some input.
Sorry for the long ramble, I thought I would try and give as much info about the various issues I had, as it might give more clues as to what the problem might be.

Nothing I can lay my finger on, so I recommend this generic approach:

1. Check the support section of the ASUS website for a BIOS update. When available, apply it.

2. Disable all visual effects in Cinnamon:

3. Disable as many as possible of the add-ons and extensions that you've added to your Firefox.

4. Simplify your hardware: unhook some USB devices from your machine (there are a lot, judging from the inxi output).

Thanks for the reply, I will give your suggestions a try.
I must admit I didn't verify the ISO before installing it, smacked wrists. So I downloaded it again and followed the steps to verify it. Everything checked out good so I popped it on the USB Stick for a reinstall tomorrow if I can't figure out the problem.

As for the USB devices, I have plugged in:
SD card reader
Xbox controller
mouse
wireless keyboard dongle
TV tuner
USB stick (as I was making a new boot drive to reinstall mint 20 in case the first one was broken)

Everything else that shows up is beyond me. The Bluetooth is part of the motherboard and cant be removed. All the other hub type stuff is part of the computer and not a bunch of external USB hubs.

I do have a webcam and a USB mic that I sometimes plug in, but the computer still locks up without them attached.

I have had a bad experience when updating the BIOS on my old XP machine, I bricked it. so I won't try messing with that for now. I will say that this pc when running windows 7 only had 2 BSOD in the 9 years of having it. First time was straight out of the box before updating graphics drivers, and the second was after upgrading the graphics cards from GTX 580 SLI to GTX 970 SLI. It was a very stable system. I often left it running for weeks between reboots and games ran reliably with hardly any crashes. I used it for video editing (Davinci Resolve) 3d modelling, music making, gaming. It's water cooled and never gets anywhere near thermal throttling.
Graphics card temps in windows at idle were around 43C but in Linux they run 10C Cooler at idle.

I can't see it struggling with the visual effects of Linux mint, but I will disable all the effects to see if that stops the system locking up.

As for Firefox browser extensions I only have uBlock Origin. I don't have any other browsers that I know of.

Other software I installed is:

Kaffeine
Audacity
PuleAudio Volume Control
Steam

I guess there isn't any way to get info on what caused the lock up as I have to hard kill it losing everything. Is CTRL+SHIFT+F1 the equivalent to CTRL+ALT+DEL?
Because when it locks up that does nothing. Not that I know what to type in there to fix anything anyway.

I hope I can get this working smoothly as I really don't want to suffer windows 10

No. It should switch to a virtual console. And in there, you can give commands. Here's one that's easy to remember:

Thanks for the tip, I don't hold out much hope of it working, but hopefully it will come in handy in other situations.

Oh on another note, I removed one of my graphics cards in case running SLI was causing issues, but it still locked up.

I have installed nothing else and was just watching some YouTube in Firefox and the system locked up.

I noticed a message when booting "Initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed"
No idea what that means but I found this article and applied the changes. That error seems to be gone now.

I continued to watch youtube and after 5 minutes everything locked up again and the sound from the video got stuck in a loop.
How do I even start to troubleshoot this problem?

Thanks for the help, I have followed the instructions and I have the update manager open and can see a list of Kernels.

Under 5.4 all of the Kernels say superseded or unsupported.
It says 5.4.0-26 installed(Superseded) and 5.4.0-48 Active(Unsupported)

Under 5.8 they all say unsupported.

Why don't any of them say they are supported?

ok so I applied 5.8.0-22 and rebooted. As soon as I opened firefox the computer locked up. I forced shutdown and rebooted and managed to open firefox.
The update manager says I'm using the new Kernel, but how do I remove it as the queue uninstall option is greyed out.

I guess I will just have to reninstall the whole OS again?

I have briefly turned it off to see if it reduced the screen tearing I am getting, but it didn't make any difference in that regard. I will turn it off again and see if the system freezes. Though the system will freeze without firefox running. It only ever freezes if I am doing something graphics related though.

It mostly freezes either as I press a key or click the mouse, though not all the time.

The crash reports are showing keyboard issues. So I have just swapped out my keyboard for another one, but this one has a dead P key and dead F5 key plus a few other keys, so I cant use this one for much other than testing purposes.
The keyboard I was using worked fine, even the volume and media buttons worked, so I'm not sure why the crash reports are keyboard related.

That's the only crash report the system has, and the system has locked up 5 times this evening so far.

Maybe check in /var/log/syslog to see if there are any warnings or error messages around the time of the freezes.

Screen tearing would not be affected by FF hardware acceleration. I seem to recall seeing fixes for that, but I'd have to look for it.

I do not have this file, but the command did not fail for me. The system asked me to authenticate (give my password) and then it opened a blank file so I could create it.

There is something wrong with your install if this location is not mounted.

When you did your clean install, did you install it in legacy mode or efi?

That is usually an erroneous error. While that garbage is spewed in the terminal, the file does usually still open, but running sudo touch /lib/modprobe.d/nvidia-kms.conf first will probably ensure it all works.

The output shows an error message then a prompt as if nothing happened.

I do not have Nvidia, so I do not have the file, but he would have the file and just be editing an existing file. The people in the other thread did not mention getting error messages.
