Night Mode

They say that blue spectrum’s of light are bad for your eyes, especially at night,
& when you’re more likely to be looking at your phone in a dark environment.
- This also supposedly leads to poor sleep, which leads to poor health.

On desktop computers, you can use an app called f.lux.
these apps give your screen a red tint to remove the blue light spectrum from your display,
making it easier on the eyes in dark environments. It can be a little jarring at first,
but it doesn’t take long to get used to it. And once you’ve adjusted,
it’s actually pretty nice - - you can even find it to be incredibly soothing to look at.

The indicator project was done by Kilian Valkhof (creator of trimage),
and he's posted the indicator applet source on github.
The new package uses Gnome's AppIndicator, so it works on Ubuntu 10.04+.

- Ubuntu/Debian Manual Install - - this includes LinuxMint as well.
you will have to use Terminal - to install f.lux.

once installed - you will have to tell f.lux your Lat / Long - so that f.lux knows where you are.
- CONUS people can just enter their ZipCode.

Thanks Pierre. I've heard about these sorts of programs before, but having just installed on both pc & tablet I can say they make late night browsing much more pleasant.

Is this function standard on latest versions of Mint?

If not, can you not just change the hue to remove blue from spectrum - thanks

Redshift is available on my LM20 Cinnamon version. I believe it is available on the other versions as well, but I do not recall for sure.

I think most people set up Redshift according to their geographic location so that it automatically shifts the spectrum of light from the screen according to the time of day. I prefer to use it in manual mode so that I can adjust the light appropriately for a sunny day or a cloudy/rainy day or night or even adjust instantly on a partly cloudy day as the sun is covered or uncovered. I find that three levels of redshift are enough for me, but you could use more. All I need to do to change is hit <Ctrl><Alt><M> (Morning), <Ctrl><Alt><E> (Evening), or <Ctrl><Alt><N> (Night) as descibed here:

The degree Kelvin numbers I use work for my monitor - others may need adjustment.

--Thank you much for the applet info. My redshift all of a sudden just today within an hour ago or less just choose not to fetch the geo location to work at all anymore. Reinstall after reinstall yielded nothing. Then purged everything about redshift and following instructions on that link you provided. Finally...back to normal. Cheers. --

I just use a command in the terminal emulator

redshift-gtk

. You can then again shut the redshift off by pressing ctr c. I personally think it's a whole lot easier then installing an application.
