Streaming Pulseaudio over network

Post by jb8350i »

I would like to be able to play the audio from my desktop (running mint) to my htpc (also running mint) over the network. I've got it to where I'm able to control the volume of the desktop on the desktop's speakers from the htpc, but after quite awhile of playing with it, I've been unable to get the desktop feed to come out of the htpc. I'm sure I've just missed a check box somewhere, but I don't know - this is all still fairly new to me.

Any ideas?

For an appropriate answer from anyone who might know
--more context needed, hardware:software

In terminal, check
  • inxi -F
--short list of all hardware, both computers
    inxi -h
--help options for the inxi command
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/sound-solutio ... ent-page-1
http://x4.6times7.org/dokuwiki/doku.php ... pulseaudio
Also will depend on audio chipsets, for example Intel hd audio can be problematic..

And still didn't get anything from the desktop.

Here's the results of inxi

This card is on my ancient box (of 2001)
Audio: Card-1 VIA VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller driver VIA 82xx Audio at port e800

This card is on my IBM notebook (of 2003):
Audio: Card Intel 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller driver Intel ICH at ports 1c00 18c0

I would be a bit sceptical about PulseAudo in this borscht

I've been using the card 2 (Card-2 C-Media Electronics CM8738driver C-Media PCI at port d400) on the desktop. I've also just tried to get it to work on my laptop, and have only been able to control the volume of the desktop on that as well.

Edit for info on laptop that won't work either:

The problem is not the audio card.

CPU and RAM - this is the problem.

You need a powerful box to run PulseAudio (at least quadro core)

Those both cards (especially VIA) work well with OSS4 (fantastic performance!)

There are other solutions ICECAST, or else (I have not tried them)

Do not throw away the old boxes!!!
You can use them for experiments with Linux, OpenSolaris, or else.
