Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
OS: Linux Mint 20 XFCE
This is a new issue, I'm not sure what caused it. When I start my computer, the Output Devices in Pulse changes from Headphones (correct) to Speakers (incorrect). If I change it by going into this window:
everything is fine until I reboot.
I have read the other posts on this general issue in the forums, but none really seem to be quite the same problem. Any help/suggestions are appreciated. Thanks so much.

Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
Hi begtognen,
We can try to force the headphones to be the default port, but I'd first like to see this output to see if there's any clue why this is happening:
That will have a URL on the last line of output pointing to your sound setup.

Code: Select all
curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
Hi MrEen,
I forgot to say that I'll never use speakers, so a solution that does away the speaker option entirely would be fine.
Oh, interesting - I saw this in the output:
It looks like speakers are priority 10000 and headphones are priority 9900 - maybe that's the issue?
Here's what I have selected under Configuration, in case that's important:

Oh, interesting - I saw this in the output:
Code: Select all
analog-output-speaker: Speakers (priority: 10000, latency offset: 0 usec)
Properties:
device.icon_name = "audio-speakers"
Part of profile(s): output:analog-stereo, output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo, output:analog-surround-40, output:analog-surround-40+input:analog-stereo

Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
Could be, but I'm not certain. It would make sense the headphones have the highest priority, and do when the speakers are a line out attached set. I never thought to look for laptops.
But, the real source of your issue is the system thinks the headphones are unplugged. This happens to quite a few people, and I've not yet nailed down a reason.
With the curl output, I might get some ideas, but if nothing else, it'll give me what I need to force the headphones to be used.

Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
I'll paste it in pieces, as it's too big to include in one piece:
Code: Select all

Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
Okay, you have something I've never seen before; 2 headphone mixer elements:
And correspondingly, 2 headphone pins:
I suspect that's a result of a driver tweak that was meant to give you a headset mic option.
Regardless, it appears PulseAudio is only seeing one headphone port, so I think this will work for you:
In the terminal enter
Save the file and reboot and hopefully the issue is solved.
And I just noticed your card wasn't even set for analog output but was instead set to HDMI output. If you're using HDMI output until the headphones are plugged in, I can't say with any certainty the above is going to work.
You may need to run this to set the profile to analog output:
Or this:
Code: Select all
Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 74
Mono:
Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [-74.00dB] [off]
Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [-74.00dB] [off]
Simple mixer control 'Headphone',1
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 74
Mono:
Front Left: Playback 74 [100%] [0.00dB] [on]
Front Right: Playback 74 [100%] [0.00dB] [on]
Code: Select all
[ 13.350460] snd_hda_codec_conexant hdaudioC0D0: hp_outs=2 (0x19/0x1c/0x0/0x0/0x0)
Regardless, it appears PulseAudio is only seeing one headphone port, so I think this will work for you:
In the terminal enter
xed admin:///etc/pulse/default.pa
and when the file opens add this to the bottom:
Code: Select all
pacmd set-sink-port alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo analog-output-headphones
And I just noticed your card wasn't even set for analog output but was instead set to HDMI output. If you're using HDMI output until the headphones are plugged in, I can't say with any certainty the above is going to work.
You may need to run this to set the profile to analog output:
Code: Select all
pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3 output:analog-stereo
Code: Select all
pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo
Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
I got this error when I pasted in the first command:
Should I proceed though it's not mounted?
Also I think you're absolutely right, the problem started when I briefly borrowed a headset (which I won't use again), which matches the two headphone mixer elements weirdness.
Code: Select all
** (xed:6609): WARNING **: 08:47:23.979: The specified location is not mounted

Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
As long as the file opened for editing, then yes. If it didn't let's see the output of
ls -l /etc/pulse
Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
It did open for editing, and then gave me this error:
I pasted in the text, saved, restarted, and now Pulse says "establishing connection to Pulse Audio, please wait" but never does establish a connection. Deleting the new text put everything back to where it was in my first forum post.

Okay, this is a new one to me. Let's see the output of
ls -l /etc/pulse/client.conf.d

Here you go:

Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
I've seen that once before. You installed something that added that, but I can't remember what it was. Correction, I never knew what caused it in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=329042&p=1878395&h ... n#p1878395
I looked back, and found another error I made, when I asked you to add this to /etc/pulse/default.pa:
That's the command line entry to use, but not for that file. Change it to this and we should have this sorted out. Still won't why, but sorted out just the same:

Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
Thanks so much for persisting on this. I wanted to ask before I tried the latest: I used a headset once that I won't use again, that - as you suspected - I think caused the trouble.
Now I've bought a different headset for daily use. (It works just fine.) I wanted to double-check that I won't be mucking up *that* headset...?

Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
Assuming you have the same issue with the new headphones, go ahead and run the last change I gave. But if it's not changing to the speakers, there might not be any need.
If you want to test only, without making a change to the file, you can run the incorrect command in the terminal:
That should change the output to the headphones until the next reboot.
Assuming the issue is still occurring, and the above command works until the next reboot, then the other one should work in the file to automate this:

Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
Thanks so much for taking the time to help. In the end because of other weird issues I ended up reinstalling Linux Mint 20 and all is well now.
Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
Ahh, so it could have been something too deeply embedded for us to have ever had a chance to solve.
Any chance this was an upgrade from 19.3 instead of a full install? I could accept the upgrade route causing this.
Regardless, I'm glad you system is working properly now.
Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
It was a full install, sorry!
Re: Output Devices in Pulse Keeps Changing to Speakers
Weird. Same ISO used for both installs? Or did you download and burn a new one?
I'll resist saying maybe it was a bad ISO!
