[SOLVED] HP ProBook 455 G7 with integrated AMD Radeon graphics card running in software rendering mode

I have recently bought a new laptop HP ProBook 455 G7 with integrated AMD Radeon graphics card.

My problem is that Linux Mint shows a warning that the laptop is running without hardware acceleration in software rendering mode.

Driver manager says that my computed does not need any additional drivers.

I wouldn't expect anything in driver manager for AMD graphics but that's a quite new machine and you're running a 5.4 kernel. That may not be new enough Try opening update manager and going to the view kernels section. Install the newest kernel listed there and reboot.

The 5.4 kernel does not have the graphics driver for Renoir while the 5.8 kernel does. If you run the command again, you will see amdgpu both as the driver in the location I highlighted, but also as the driver in the Display line. You will also see an AMD renderer in the last line.

However the next day I started getting black screens after booting, which can be fixed by using nomodeset kernel parameter.

If you check the graphics info you posted it indicates there is no Renoir driver. Did you happen to update the kernel in between the boots that worked and the ones which did not? If you did, boot into grub and boot with the prior kernel and make sure to delete the one causing the issue.

If you did not change the kernel, what in the system might have changed between the boots?

I did a search on [amdgpu] *ERROR* Unable to locate a BIOS ROM which was in the first log info you provided and also in the unsuccessful one in your most recent post. I found this thread [SOLVED] Amdgpu driver BIOS ROM not found at boot in Ryzen 2500U That issue was solved by turning Secure Boot off.

Do you have secure boot turned on or off? You can check by running the following in a terminal:

While researching issues for an HP ProBook 435 G7 on another thread, I came across someone with the same computer as you having issues.
Call trace on each boot both in 'dc_link_set_backlight_level' and 'rn_clk_mgr_construct' Scroll about half-way through to see comments by Carsten Hammer.

I would suggest running hardware checks to make sure all is good.

You not only have different hardware, but also do not list having a problem with your graphics card running in software rendering mode (which is the topic of this thread). Having different hardware means you should have a separate thread. Please create a new thread for your issue and do not piggyback on someone else's thread. And when you create that new thread, please post what problems you think you are having because of the error message you see during boot up. If you are not having problems, then it may not be an issue which needs any attention.

You have a Lenovo and the OP of this thread has an HP. That is not similar. You are able to boot without getting a "software rendering" message, yet the OP is not. That means something other than the cpu/apu is an issue. I doubt Lenovo and HP are using the same BIOS/UEFIs in their computers and that definitely could be a factor.

Users on this forum help other users get their systems functional. When error messages do not adversely affect the ability of the system to boot and run, then they often can be ignored. Most of these computers were designed to run on Windows and many messages are a result of running an operating system other than Windows on them.

thanks for answer, I know this forum is to help each other to get our systems running and I don't expect to have LM on my laptop running as good(?) as windows, but I want to understand what such msgs could indicate.(possible bug as per google).
And I'm not even talking about issues with LM and T14 and USB-C dock...... connected with 2 monitors....

I've been using LM on my laptops ibm/dell for years and it suits me well, but with this latest T14 I have more issues as I expected.

EFI variables are not supported on this system

I checked that secure boot is disabled manually:

BIOS/UEFI boot?
I assume that booting in Legacy mode might cause the problem, so I am going to migrate my system to UEFI boot mode using https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI# ... _UEFI_mode. Is it worth trying at all?

Trying other drivers
Maybe I should try other drivers like ati or radeon?

Current workaround
At the moment I am using the following kernel parameter in grub config do get at least system with software rendering mode and not crashes during boots:

Secure Boot is only used when running in UEFI mode, so if you are using legacy mode then it would not be a factor.

You are running a dual boot computer with one OS running GPT and the other MBR from the looks of what you posted earlier (and I copied below). If Windows 10 came pre-installed on your computer then it is running UEFI (GPT). It's my understanding all OSes in a single laptop should be using the same mode, but maybe you have a special setup situation where the drive not in use is disconnected and thus not a factor.

Your apu uses the amdgpu driver. It does not use the radeon driver. The ati driver was already loaded on an earlier inxi -G you posted (below). See the line starting with the word Display and go to the word driver. Ati and fbdev are the ones loaded.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have updated the kernel and it worked for a couple of boots.

All three of those drivers, amdgpu, ati, radeon, are in the kernel and load automatically when appropriate for the apu in the computer. The fact amdgpu is not loading means there is a problem somewhere. I do not know if the problem is with the kernel, the driver, or with something in your laptops hardware instructions (BIOS/UEFI).

I am going to repeat my suggestion that you run hardware checks on your laptop. The person with the HP ProBook 435 G7 I mentioned earlier did find hardware issues. Updated kernels and amdgpu drivers will not overcome hardware issues. Make sure to check the memory.

That person's computer has the very same BIOS/EUFI as your computer, so I know that what you have listed for a BIOS version above is not the latest available for your laptop. That person updated to the August BIOS and it did not help. That bootup still had kernel panic/oops and a crashed amdgpu. I do not know if that is the same problem your laptop is having. (I read through the entire log for the ProBook 435 G7 to see the oops and other issues.)

The HP ProBook 455 G7 I referenced earlier was testing a lot of different kernel versions to try and find something which worked. However, I do not know if the hardware specs were exactly the same as yours.

As far as kernel parameters, it's possible the iommu=soft mentioned by roblm may help with this issue. Both it and pci=noats (with the latter being the preferred one) were found to work on a Lenovo in this thread [SOLVED] Kernel 5.8 does not boot on Lenovo Thinkpad L14 20U50001GE. That laptop has Renoir but a different cpu (and a different BIOS). I was not able to find what might work best with an HP. Each kernel parameter has its pluses and minuses.

It looks like that may be the way to get this issue fixed. I found this thread tonight [SOLVED] amdgpu(?) problem on HP ProBook 455 G7 where "Turning Legacy Boot off did the trick!". Person was having a very similar problem to what you have been experiencing in that only sometimes the laptop would boot.

For all other users coming across this post the summary is below.

Solution which helped me

1. Check that your Linux is installed in UEFI mode. Instruction
2. Change your system to UEFI mode otherwise. Instruction.
   I needed to boot from Live USB to do this, since I got the following error while doing it from the machine itself

   The current session is in Legacy mode. Please reboot the computer, and use this software in an EFI session.
   This will enable this feature. For example, use a live-USB of Boot-Repair-Disk-64bit (www.sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair-cd),
   after making sure your BIOS is set up to boot USB in EFI mode.
   

   Also I added ESP flag to the /boot/efi partition (Right click on the partition in Gparted -> Manage Flags -> tick esp)

   

3. Disable legacy boot in BIOS. For me it was the following sequence: press Esc during startup -> select BIOS Setup (F10) -> go to the Advanced tab and select Secure Boot Configuration -> select Legacy Support Disable and Secure Boot Disable -> press Esc, Save configuration.
