Virtualbox 6.1 fails to install to Ubuntu 20.04

Post by Dannyboy147 »

Hi Everyone. First off this is my first time using Linux/Ubuntu so im probably making basic errors here. Ive trawled through forums over the last couple of days looking for a resolution but im now stumped!! I need to install Virtualbox onto Ubuntu 20.04 but im failing at every hurdle!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-I done a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04, all software is up to date. All looks well.
-I went to the virtualbox website and downloaded Virtualbox 6.1_6.1.16-140961~ubuntu~eoan_amd64.deb
-Once downloaded i then hit "install" and i get the error message-"unable to install virtualbox 6.1:the following packages have unmet dependancies;"
-Ive also tried to install this using the terminal application (using info i found online). So in my downloads folder i see the download from virtualbox, clisk a blank space and select "open in terminal".

Type sudo su command then enter password
type ls and i get the response 'virtualbox-6.1_6.1.14-140239~Ubuntu~eoan_amd64(1).deb'
type

Code: Select all

dpkg -i virtualbox-6.1_6.1.14-140239~Ubuntu~eoan_amd64(1).deb 'virtualbox-6.1_6.1.14-140239~Ubuntu~eoan_amd64(1).deb'
something starts to happen but then i get this (screenshot of my whole session).................................

Reason: Ubuntu 20.04 is not really Linux Mint, hence thread moved from "(Mint) Main Edition" to "Chat about Linux"

Reason: Adding
tags. It puts long output into a neat scrollable box and retains some helpful formatting.

Is this my system log?
Whatever it is, it's not the system information you were asked to provide. Also: if you're posting a lot of output such as this, please put it in

tags. You can use the button that looks like this:

If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!

Hello, Dannyboy147.

About your "system information":

so, tell us something about your machine: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=318644
Pierre had not asked you to post a link to the homepage of your PC vendor. He had asked for your Linux Mint system information and given a link to a post, where you will find how to share your "system information".

Of course those steps will not work on genuine Ubuntu 20.04. Therefore, I suggest to follow the steps given in the last post of the same thread, please: How to post your System Information (inxi report) the manual way

About the downloaded virtualbox file:
virtualbox-6.1_6.1.14-140239~Ubuntu~eoan_amd64(1).deb
I spot the Ubuntu nickname eoan in it. But Ubuntu 20.04 is focal.
Could this be the reason why the software package needs dependent packages, which are not available with the needed versions on Ubuntu 20.04?

Was there no virtualbox download package mentioning focal in its name? In case there is, then it will be very likely better suited for Ubuntu 20.04.

At the time of this writing, the Linux host link at the top of the virtualbox download page is for both eoan and focal in the same deb package. HOWEVER, the repo has a dists/focal directory.

@OP Don't install deb packages using the dpkg command, use gdebi instead. dpkg doesn't pull in dependencies and gdebi will.
sudo gdebi package.deb
---

How I successfully installed virtualbox 6.1.16 on Mint 20:

Step1: Add deb [arch=amd64] https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian focal contrib to /etc/apt/sources.lists.d/virtualbox.list
Step 2: Import and add the key; wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
Step 3: sudo apt update && sudo apt install --install-recommends virtualbox-6.1

---

Optional:
Download and install the ext pack: https://download.virtualbox.org/virtual ... ox-extpack
Add user to vboxusers group (will require logout/login) sudo usermod -aG vboxusers <your-username>

While it's not technically required to reboot; it's not a bad idea to allow all modules to load cleanly. Especially if you do the optional steps.

Code: Select all

apt list --installed | grep -i virtualbox

WARNING: apt does not have a stable CLI interface. Use with caution in scripts.

virtualbox-6.1/unknown,now 6.1.16-140961~Ubuntu~eoan amd64 [installed]
Intel i7 6-core 5820k overclocked to 4.4Ghz; 64GB ram
Linux Mint 20 (cinnamon)

This is important because we need to know if your CPU suports virtualisation, and if that feature is enabled in the BIOS/UEFI.
