MrEen wrote: Sat Nov 21, 2020 12:31 am Just spotted this as well:

Code: Select all

[  492.611179] qasmixer[2048]: segfault at f8 ip 00007f106e56b5a5 sp 00007fff13c6ecc0 error 4 in libasound_module_ctl_arcam_av.so[7f106e56a000+3000]
That may have been related to the libasound updates.

Let's see a fresh copy of this:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -C1 -E 'ALSA|HDA|sof|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel'
With that kernel you're using, it might be necessary to put sudo in front of that command, but probably not.
New dmesg output:

Code: Select all

zoya@zoyas-pc ~ $ sudo su
[sudo] password for zoya:
root@zoyas-pc:/home/zoya# dmesg | grep -C1 -E 'ALSA|HDA|sof|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel'

Hmm, way back at the beginning of this thread you removed the boot override in HDAJackRetask, but it's still there:

Code: Select all

[   17.846878] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: Applying patch firmware 'hda-jack-retask.fw'
[   17.847167] snd_hda_intel 0000:01:00.1: Applying patch firmware 'hda-jack-retask.fw'
Did you redo it, or did the removal fail?

I was playing with the ATI card after I turned off the built-in audio in the BIOS. It should have no impact on the Intel HDA settings but I can remove it and run dmesg again.

I removed it again, and re-ran dmesg:

I expect [drm:radeon_dvi_detect [radeon]] *ERROR* HDMI-A-1: probed a monitor but no|invalid EDID as long as there's no monitor connected to the adapter, meaning no picture, but I should - in theory - still have sound. Shouldn't I? I might try connecting her tower to the TV (HDMI) and see if the audio works with a picture, the way it was intended originally.

Those last things you posted are the reason for needing the probe_mask=1 parameter. And what that does is negate the faulty BIOS reporting.

Let's see this one again now that the override is removed:

Code: Select all

wget http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh -O alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh
I have a couple of ideas that might work depending on what I see there to at least hopefully get the headphone port working.

Well, removing the override fixed what I saw wrong with 0x1b, so that shoots down my ideas.

But a new one popped up that I can't say will have any effect but it's worth a try:

In the terminal enter sudo alsactl store followed by xed admin:///var/lib/alsa/asound.state and when the file opens scroll down to this section:

Code: Select all

	control.40 {
		iface CARD
		name 'Line Out Front Jack'
		value false
		comment {
			access read
			type BOOLEAN
			count 1
		}
	}
	control.41 {
		iface CARD
		name 'Line Out Surround Jack'
		value false
		comment {
			access read
			type BOOLEAN
			count 1
		}
	}
	control.42 {
		iface CARD
		name 'Line Out CLFE Jack'
		value false
		comment {
			access read
			type BOOLEAN
			count 1
		}
	}
	control.43 {
		iface CARD
		name 'Line Out Side Jack'
		value false
		comment {
			access read
			type BOOLEAN
			count 1
		}
	}
	control.44 {
		iface CARD
		name 'Front Headphone Jack'
		value false
		comment {
			access read
			type BOOLEAN
			count 1
		}
	}
Change each false to true then save the file and run sudo alsactl restore. Then test the sound.

Well, everything was going fine, until the last instruction:

Code: Select all

zoya@zoyas-pc ~ $ sudo alsactl restore
alsactl: set_control:1461: Cannot write control '2:0:0:IEC958 Playback Default:0' : Operation not permitted
Still no sound, and still only SPDIF shows up.

At this point, I think I'm just going to call it a hardware issue. :( My next project will be to see if I can cobble something else together in place of this Dell. I have enough spare parts to build a new machine, but it's not going to be quite as nice as this one. On the flip side, however, the sound should probably work.

I appreciate all your help, MrEen. You've given me a lot to work with, should I encounter audio issues again. :)

Damn!

I highly doubt this will make any difference, but run this and try it again:

Code: Select all

pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo
The reason for my doubt is the error is from ALSA not PulseAudio, but it just seems like we're so close.

And did we ever try sudo alsa force-reload?

We've done sudo alsa force-reload once before, but I'll do it again.

Here's what we got:

Code: Select all

Still no sound, though I do see this now:

Tried both the rear green jack and the front green jack to no avail. The reason I'm leaning towards hardware is because other distro live ISOs have the same issue. I suppose I could try something different like Mandriva or Fedora, since they're not using the Debian base that Ubuntu (and hence Mint), or Knoppix use, though I haven't used a Red Hat variant since the 1990s when I had to install it off 3.5" floppies. It's certainly easier than building a new machine!

Manjaro is a good one to test. Lots of differences in the sound stack compared to anything Ubuntu-like.

Wish we could have figured this out! :evil:

I'm downloading the ISOs now but won't try until later. Since I work the graveyard shift, I really need to get some sleep, as I haven't been to bed yet.

I'll report back after I've tested the others.

I had to wait a while for her to finish gaming, but here's what I have.

I tested 4 other distros, not Ubuntu or Debian based: Fedora 33, OpenMandriva 4.1, Mageia 7.1, and Manjaro 20. So far, I'm batting negative 1,000. No sound in any of them, and still the same issue: only the SPDIF output shows.

Different kernels, different bases, different driver providers, different systems in almost every respect, but same result. More convinced than ever before that it's something screwy with the hardware. Something happened (apparently) while it wasn't being used, and it's messing with the audio component.

The only other thing I could try would be to replace the video card and see if that somehow resolves whatever conflict is raging behind the scenes here, unless there are other ideas. At this point, I think we've literally tried every play in the book, and all with the same depressing result, right?

Yeah, I think we've exhausted all our options here.

The only suggestion I can make is something like this should work for sound: https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-External ... GN8GWXM80G

Well. Now I'm really upset.

It's not recognizing the USB audio adapter either.

That is to say, it SEES the adapter, and lsusb tells me what it is, but the sound system won't use it and I can't choose it.

I would say this is DEFFINITELY a hardware issue with her mobo, so I will close this thread, and update the title accordingly.

When I plug it into MY system, it's fine - no tweaking, no fussing, no tinkering with terminal commands. The sound just works:

If you want, I can try to help with that.

Let's see pacmd list-cards if you want to try.
