installing LMDE4 fron live CD
I've installed LMDE4 from a DVD ISO to a laptop, but installing to my PC stalls.
The LMDE4 Debbie options are displayed; then there's a lot of busy CD reading; then everything stops with a blank screen apart from a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen.
Ctrl-Alt-F1 gives a command-line prompt: mint@mint:~$
What commands do I need to get the installation to carry on and complete?

Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
If you can boot the live ISO and see a desktop on it, please run System Reports and upload the System Information to pastebin, then paste the generated link here in this thread. It will show what hardware you have and then we might have some idea what commands may get around the boot freeze.
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.
Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
Thanks for replying so promptly. I don't get as far as seeing a desktop.
Here are some details:
The PC is an HP M01-F0230ng AMD Ryzen 5 3400G 8 GB DDR4-SDRAM 256 GB SSD with USB Samsung SE-208 portable DVD writer instead of internal CD/DVD drive.
It came with Windows 10 pre-installed which I wiped, installing Mint 20 via live CD.

Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
That's too new for LMDE4, you'd do better with Mint 20 Cinnamon which has 5 years of support because it's an LTS release. If you still have stability issues with kernel 5.4, try kernel 5.8 instead from Mint Update Manager>View>Kernels.
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.
Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
You can also upgrade lmde4 to kernel 5.8. See for instructions https://www.unixtutorial.org/upgrading- ... ux-kernel/ (this is for kernel 5.6 so you will have to change that to 5.8 ).
If you think the issue is solved, edit your original post and add the word solved to the title.

That's all well and good but they cannot boot the install media which contains kernel 4.19vimes666 wrote: ⤴Wed Nov 18, 2020 2:53 pm You can also upgrade lmde4 to kernel 5.8. Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
Oh,I forgot about that.they cannot boot the install media
Do you get the black screen when booting from the DVD or when you get past that first menu?
Does the pc have windows installed on it? If so disable fastboot in windows first and do a real shutdown before trying to boot something else.

Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
(1) PC no longer has windows on it.
(2) I get to the first menu (LMDE4 (64-bit), ..., LMDE4 (64-bit) Nvidia drivers, check integrity of the medium). After pressing 'Enter' I get the black screen with blinking cursor in the top left of the screen.
(3) if I can't get LMDE4 with kernel 5.8 on a live CD, is there any other way I can get it installed on my PC?

Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
Have you tried to startup from the DVD option 'Start in compatibility mode'?

Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
No - what does that mean?
Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
In compatibility mode some drivers are disabled and you wil have a low screen resolution during the install, but you can still install mint in that mode.
You can also try to add the 'nomodeset ' option from the install dvd by pressing tab while the 'Start Linux Mint' choice in the menu is hilighted.

Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
@cpedretti: That is a good tip but it applies to an already installed system. The topicstarter is trying to get it installed. The driver issue will be addressed after the install (if necessary).

Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
Thanks for your comments. Can I check with you the steps you're advising?
(1) Start from live DVD in compatibility mode. If necessary, using 'nomodeset' option from DVD
(2) install LMDE4 at low resolution
(3) in LMDE4 choose and update to latest kernel (>=5.6)
(4) install amdgpu
(5) reboot and reset displsy

Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
No not so fast.
Fist we are going to try to install the normal way with some tweaks.
So, start from dvd and at the moment the first menu appears press arrow down and up again (this is to stop the timer for the autostart)
Be sure the line 'start linux mint' is highlighted and press tab.
You will see a line appearing under the menu. Go to the line with your arrow keys and add the word nomodeset behind the word splash. Be sure there is a space between nomodeset and the -- (two dashes).
Press enter.
With any luck the install works now, If not we will try the other method.
Only if the install works we will see if we still have to do something about the kernel.

Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
I followed your instructions (with slight modification) to get to the line under the menu, inserted 'nomodeset', then F10 to start ('Enter' just added a newline to the line).
After a good deal of CD/DVD reader activity it went quiet and the screen went blank with the blinking cursor top left.
What do you suggest is the next step?

Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
The second suggestion was to select the compatibility mode from the dvd menu.
I have tried it myself yesterday (from a usb stick) and I noticed that I also get a black screen witk a blinking cursor but after a minute or so the screen comes alive again. Since you use a dvd, it might even take more than a minute. I dont know how long you waited for response.
If the compatibility mode doesnt work, then I am a bit out of ideas I'm afraid.

Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
compatibility mode doesn't work either.
I get an unending series of messages on the screen:
[<number>.number>] hpet1: lost 9600 rtc interrupts
[<number>.number>] hpet1: lost 9601 rtc interrupt .... (number incrementing every second)
interspersed infrequently by
...usb: disconnect, device number <number>
and
...usb 1-11: new low-speed device number <number> using xhci_hcd
...usb 1-11: new USB device found, idVendor=04f2, idProduct=0923, bcdDevice= 1.00
...usb 1-11: new USB device strings: Mfr=1, product=2, serial number=0
input: Pixart HP USB Optical Mouse as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.2/0000:01:00.0/usb1/1...0923.0017/input/input34
..hid-generic 00030923.0017:input.hidraw1: USB HID v1.11 Mouse [Pixart HP USB Optical ....................................etc.etc
but apparently no progress towards an LMDE desktop
after waiting 40 minutes I gave up.
Is there anything else I can do?

Yes, try Mint 20 instead

Re: installing LMDE4 fron live CD
I have Mint 20. It's LMDE4 on my PC I'm trying to get, having preferred LMDE3 to Mint 19 in the past and being able to run LMDE4 on a laptop
