Error when getting information for file

Post by herra »

Hi.
I was moving a mp4 file from partition1 to the partition2, I leave the machine and when I returned the computer was turn-off. I don't know why.
I start again the PC and when I try to open partition2 a message told me:

Error when getting information for a file "/media/partition2/namefile.mp4" input/output error.

I try to delete that "namefile.mp4" but was impossible, from a terminal command line not worked also from Midnight Commander not worked, even attempted from a LiveCD but with the same result. I have a lot of data in that partition. Is will be possible recover the partition or delete that particular file without lose all content of partition?

I discover it this:
When I open the partition2 whit File Manager (Thunar) in the Dir-bar I type a direction of a SubFolder (example: /media/partition2/VideoMusic) and I can read and play the files in that folder, only "/media/partition2" in not readable.
Well, apparently the problem is the file namefile.mp4 in the main directory of the partition2.

Thanks in advance.

1. Try check system logs. Especially with the day and time of the failure.
You can find examples commands on forum, for example viewtopic.php?f=47&t=327105&start=80
You need find and read good tutorial / manual

Example
You can copy this command to terminal, edit time and click Enter key.

Code: Select all

journalctl -S "2021-01-12 10:01:01" -U "2021-01-12 10:30:00"
You can scroll pages with Page Down and PageUP keys on the keyboard .

2. Check RAM

RAM from live-CD / live-USB for example Linux Mint
However better is check with Memtes86t and Memtest86+ together from Ultimate Boot CD
https://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

3. And check hard drive

Hard drive with Gsmart ( sometimes SMART is not supported from SSD you will info in log when system booting )
https://www.linux.com/news/check-your-d ... rtcontrol/
This is only example website, don't compile any app, just install from your Synaptic package manager.
Check inside Gsmart error log

4. Check permission for file with which you have problem
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fi ... attributes
example calculator online: https://chmod-calculator.com/

5. Try move file. Maybe is just broken.

Generic names, it would be more interesting to see the real thing.
The output of the commands may show:
lsblk -io NAME,FSTYPE,SIZE,UUID,MOUNTPOINT
sudo parted -l
