Setting up webcams & audio. Mint Laptop

Post by JLC17 »

So how can I get Mint to ignore my laptops inbuilt camera (because I use it lid closed 99% of the time) and instead set my USB webcam as default.

Have downloaded Cheese which tells me my USB Webcam is working perfectly. Right up until I want to use FB messenger in Chrome and discover Chrome only wants to use the inbuilt one.

Hi JLC17,

Is the audio or video or both that you're having trouble with in FB Messenger?

If it's just audio, the issue is most likely the default input is wrong which can be checked with this command:

Code: Select all

pacmd list-sources
The asterisk you'll see next to one of the index numbers is the current default. You can copy the name between the <> brackets then run this to change the default:

Code: Select all

pacmd set-default-source PASTE-HERE-WHAT-YOU-COPIED

Thanks for that. It was video.

I found a couple of websites that allow FF to select camera. So will experiment with that.

Also I was able to install guvcview, which seems to allow some sort of config.

Very good.

You might also have an option in your BIOS to disable the built-in webcam.
