Hi L0ngNeck! Welcome to the Linux Mint forums! :D

Recompiling the kernel? For a class? Andrew Sohn's Linux Kernel Programming?
3 steps to find an answer: (1) Search forum with unique key words. (2) Search with Google and add site:linuxmint.com to your unique key word query. (3) Search with Google and add either Linux Mint or Ubuntu to your unique key word query.

Welcome aboard, L0ngNeck! I've been using Linux for 20 years and have never compiled a kernel. I have never needed to. But maybe I will try it one of these days just so I can say I did it.

Compiling a kernel is supposed to be a rite of passage, at least it was long ago. It looks like there's some fairly good instructions on the Ubuntu site. Looks fairly easy ... but may take many hours to complete (according to what I've read - never tried it). :D

That's all well and good for those who feel they need a rite of passage. I don't.
