Strange Crashes

Post by mathomas3 »

Hello all... While this issue isnt exclusive to Mint... Im hoping that you could help point me to a test or solution...

I think it's hardware related...

I recently upgraded my server with a new computer Case/Mobo/PSU/CPU and in doing so I was left with a good/solid computer that I wanted to make into my desktop/gaming computer...

I installed new SSDs and a new video card XTX Radeon 5500 XT...

The problem is that the computer will crash when playing a game(after an hour or so) or when playing a video... things that I have done to try and narrow down the cause is...

RMA the video card with a new one

While using the computer with the builtin GPU(for two weeks) it might have crashed(or rebooted) once but could have also been a windows update... so it was a lot more stable without the GPU

updated the BIOs

Ran the memtest86 through 4 passes without any errors reported

Fresh install of Windows and Mint linux

After all this the computer still crashes(it crashes more often when running windows though)

I am lost as to what could be causing this. Only think that I can think is that perhaps the PSU is at fault. I am using a video card that requires it's own power cord(meaning that it's using a part of the PSU that it's never used before and when under heavy load it???) The PSU did have 9 HDDs running in it before, that's why I dont think it's the PSU but perhaps you all know something I dont.

Anything you can suggest that I try would be of great help. Thank you!

What is the cpu temp reading?
if not sure use this command in terminal on mint.

Code: Select all

inxi -s

What I dont get is that this was a server PC for 2 years... hardly had any issues with it... never the hardware... and since adding this video card it freezes and crashes... I RMA'd the first card(company said there wasnt a fault but sent me a new card anyway) and the problem persists...

What happens when it "crashes"? Does the computer lose power? Does the screen go black? Is there one particular game that is more likely to have this happen?

This webpage AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT indicates a suggested PSU of 300W which is not high compared to suggestions for other cards, so your system may already meet that.

AMD does offer newer drivers than what you are using AMD Radeon™ RX 5500 XT Drivers & Support. I do not know if that would help reduce/eliminate your issue, but I always suggest making a Timeshift snapshot before making any graphics changes. That way if the outcome is not as you would like it, it's easy to roll back to what you previously had.

Thank you for the reply SMG... It took you good deal of time to respond/look at this post...

What happens when it "crashes"? Does the computer lose power? Does the screen go black? Is there one particular game that is more likely to have this happen?
- When it crashes... it's like a hard reset... the screen goes dark until it POSTs and boots normally... just today instead of crashing it froze when playing a video...

This webpage AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT indicates a suggested PSU of 300W which is not high compared to suggestions for other cards, so your system may already meet that.
- The PSU installed on this system is 450W... which powered 8 3.5HHDs and 2SSDs for a time... I would like to think the PSU is good... but short of this being the cause... It would be hard to explain the problem...

- This issue is present in both Mint and Windows(which crashes more frequently) but thank you for noticing that... I will update the drivers but this wouldnt solve the issue in windows... thus the problem has to be a physical one... :(

As a fellow Ryzen user, I urge you to upgrade your kernel. You absolutely need at least version 5.7 to take advantage of the recent AMD-specific optimisations, including the integrated Radeon Vega Graphics hardware acceleration. Mint supports kernel 5.8.

Go to Update Manager, then View > Linux Kernels > [Continue]. Then, from the list on the left, select 5.8 and install the top version.

To be sure you have the latest graphics APIs, including Vulkan, install the oibaf repository. Copy-and-paste these four Terminal commands...

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
sudo apt update
sudo apt dist-upgrade
sudo apt install mesa-vdpau-drivers mesa-vulkan-drivers libvulkan1 libvulkan1:i386 vulkan-utils
Linux Mint 21 Vanessa, MATE 1.26.0, kernel 5.15.0*, Dell 2-in-1
AMD Ryzen 7 5825U / Barcelo iGPU - 14" WUXGA Touchscreen
MediaTek MT7921 WiFi-6 BT-5.2; 32GB DDR4@3200MHz; XPG 2TB-NVMe

Kernel: 5.4.0-56 started problems with AMD up untill 59-60 so you really should upgrade. However, the PSU could also crash your system as you say.

Was the slot in use prior to this graphics card? If not, blow it out with compressed air.

well as it turns out... it was the RAM chips... I had a total of four in there... 2x4gig 2x16gig...

the 16gig chips were a recent add along with the video card...

the test that I did was removed the old ram cards and tried to boot... it froze at the bios... removed the 16gig chips and put in thee 4gig ones... and thus far it hasnt failed yet...

anyone else come across this before?

like I said... I ran the memtest86 program and it passed with flying colors... False Negative?

RAM turned out to be the issue which was causing a computer not to boot after a graphics card change as explained in this post of the thread Changed from Radeon to Geforce; now neither work (nor the OS).
