Video Editing Software
Good Afternoon from Australia!
May someone please recommend a noobie a good but simple video editor that can edit the volume of audio in my recordings. Some of the volume is low and I would like to simply make it louder? It would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Video Editing Software
G'day there,
it would depend on whether you are chasing an pro system, or just for home editing,
as there is several programs available, & some are already in the LinuxMint repository,
https://itsfoss.com/best-video-editing-software-linux/
does give a bit of an idea, of what is available, to use.

Re: Video Editing Software
I recommend ShotCut. I think it's very easy to use and has lot's of nice filters including Audio filters you can see in the screenshot below. I recommend you use the AppImage version: https://shotcut.org/
Re: Video Editing Software
Avidemux is even simpler IMO, you can simply set it to Copy for the video stream and apply a gain/normalize filter to the audio stream. If it's 5.1 audio it may not be so simple.

Re: Video Editing Software
Haven't used AviDemux in 10+ years. It's fine for cut + paste editor, same goes for Virtual-Dub, but totally useless as a real video editor. Maybe the OP is interested in that limitation, but I wouldn't recommend that in any real video editing question, Just my opinion.
But many people have to start somewhere, so there is some value in these very basic (limited) video editors.....

Re: Video Editing Software
Hi,
I used to love shotcut when using it on other distros, but every time I collected enough energy to try and find out why I could not get the audio working, I miserably failed. Says it uses AAC as codec in its properties. I hear no sound at all from it. When I export it, it will render the audio just fine, I can play it back, but I need to be able to edit it.
Anyone have any suggestions or links so I can try it again?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Video Editing Software
I use avidemux to extract the audio from a movie, then modify the audio with an audio editor (usually more than just normalizing the volume), then use avidemux again to put the modified audio back into the movie; then you can save the movie file with "copy" for both audio and video so nothing has to be encoded again. (You can do the same thing with ffmpeg...if you feel like getting used to it)HappyLoner wrote: ⤴Sun Jan 26, 2020 12:08 amMay someone please recommend a noobie a good but simple video editor that can edit the volume of audio in my recordings. I haven't used shotcut, and its built-in audio editor might be easier assuming it has a "just copy the video" function when you save the file with the modified audio, but the same video data.

Re: Video Editing Software
Hey, not that I know of, I simply import mp4 that I filmed myself from my cameraphone
Re: Video Editing Software
Smartphone cameras generally record aac audio in an .mp4 container or pcm in an .mov container. Neither of those should pose a problem for ShotCut, I've edited many cellphone videos in the past. Try playing some other audio as a test, such as mp3 or wav. If it can't play those, maybe your problem lies in your system. You may also want to try the AppImage version of ShotCut. Also might want to make sure your audio track is not muted.
Re: Video Editing Software
I've been using Blender VSE for video editing for about a year. I know it's supposedly not the best thing to use, but I learnt it and liked it and got used to it quickly, and didn't want to learn something else.
This wasn't really a problem until recently when my content creator bought a greenscreen and I used the Blender Compositor to key out the greenscreen for the first time. It worked great up until rendering, at which point it was revealed that a 35000 frame 10 minute video would take about 10 days to complete, just for this one step. I tested an AWS 8 GPU server and saw that it would still take about 3 days and cost over $400.
Weird that with the same video, command-line ffmpeg with chromakey filter gets it done (and overlays it over another video) in about 30 minutes.
Anyway, not a Blender recommendation, just wanted to ask you guys: since I apparently have to switch Video Editors even though I really don't want to, are any of the programs being talked about in here similar to Blender VSE in use/style?

Re: Video Editing Software
Hi HappyLoner,
I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.
It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.
It would also help to tell us about the types of videos, how you recorded them (phone, camera, videocam, download, etc...), and whatever else you care to share. You can install mediainfo and mediainfo-gui, then right-click a video file and select mediainfo and let us know. I re-read your replies and see cameraphone.
I use Kdenlive the most, but there are a few really good to great Linux video editors and most of them can adjust the volume track. You can easily separate the video and its audio into video and audio tracks if you want.

Re: Video Editing Software
I've used Blender for 3-D graphics, but never as a video editor, so can't comment on that. Chroma-keying is supported on many video editors like ShotCut and Kdenlive. They both run on ffmpeg, so will obviously be faster than Blender. There is always a learning curve for any s/w, but few are as steep as learning Blender in my opinion.
Re: Video Editing Software
Blender 3D Modeling looks pretty intimidating, I must admit, but I've only used the VSE (and the Compositor once) and I found it intuitive and easy to learn.racer-x wrote: ⤴Thu Jan 14, 2021 8:30 pm I've used Blender for 3-D graphics, but never as a video editor, so can't comment on that. I thought Blender VSE used ffmpeg too...? Or at least I choose 'FFmpeg video' in the File Format option. But it does seem to have a rep for being crazy slow for rendering (without scripts or add-ons).
I have Shotcut downloaded and I guess I'll give it a try. I tried Resolve not too long ago, but it was buggy and intimidating so I threw it back. I feel like I tried Kdenlive once too but don't remember why it didn't stick.

Solved Re: Video Editing Software
I just downloaded a testfile (mp3) but that won't play in shotcut either. Well it does, but there's no audible output. All the peakmeters etc are working just fine, maybe it's a more general Linux Mint problem. Where would it be muted? After my walk, I'll try the Appimage version you suggested...aaaaaand that works. Solved, tyvmracer-x wrote: ⤴Thu Jan 14, 2021 3:51 pm Smartphone cameras generally record aac audio in an .mp4 container or pcm in an .mov container. Glad that worked for you. I mostly use AppImages these days because they are so much easier to manage. In case anyone wants to know where to mute/un-mute the track audio in ShotCut....forumforcinggoogle wrote: ⤴Fri Jan 15, 2021 12:34 pm I just downloaded a testfile (mp3) but that won't play in shotcut either. Re: Video Editing Software
if your main concern is audio, I would first focus on popping that up separately. The audio editing capabilities built into most video editors is pretty limited. You can get a lot more control over your audio if you drop it into a dedicated audio editor, add your compression, EQs, filters, etc., then drop it back into your video editor.HappyLoner wrote: ⤴Sun Jan 26, 2020 12:08 am Good Afternoon from Australia!

Audacity is obviously a pretty popular but there are more powerful, full-fledged DAW (Digital Audio Workstations) that can help you clean up audio even better. See this list for some options: https://midination.com/blog/free-music- ... -software/
I would particularly recommend Ardour since it has far better mixing capabilities than Audacity out of the box: https://ardour.org/
Re: Video Editing Software
Or you can extract save the audio and use mp3gain/aacgain to bring it to the desired volume. Then on avidemux you select this new audio on audio track and you save the video file with settings for both video and audiostream to copy. This way you avoid reencoding which degrades quality.
Re: Video Editing Software
Shotcut was my first thought, but I just started using it a little bit, and using it for your task is more complicated than with other methods, which is: extract the audio from the video file, edit the audio with an audio editor (but don't change the length, generally), then replace the audio in the video file with the modified audio.HappyLoner wrote: ⤴Sun Jan 26, 2020 12:08 am May someone please recommend a noobie a good but simple video editor that can edit the volume of audio in my recordings. You can extract the audio with command-line ffmpeg or GUI avidemux, or even with the audio editor itself (see pic).
You can change the volume with audio editors audacity, or ocenaudio which is easier to use.
You can replace the video's audio track with the new audio file with ffmpeg or avidemux.
Avidemux is real easy for this stuff, and adjusting the volume with either audio editor is very simple. As mentioned, avidemux itself can also change the audio volume, but (IIRC) you have to know by how much. Avidemux has a nice feature of being able to copy the video without re-encoding when you save the new video file with the new audio, ffmpeg, too, come to think of it.
Also, you can sometimes open the video file with an audio editor and get the sound - open an mp4 file with ocenaudio (audacity can do it too), but when you save the file you just save the audio file:

Re: Video Editing Software
I let ffmpeg automatically fix the audio dynamic range of some poorly encoded videos with
ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -c:v copy -af dynaudnorm out.mp4
(copies video as is, uses the dynaudnorm audio filter to fix the audio).
ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -c:v copy -af dynaudnorm out.mp4
(copies video as is, uses the dynaudnorm audio filter to fix the audio).
