Intermittet wifi on hp pavillion dv9000

Hello to all!,

I have been trying to find a solution for this, but it seems there are specific possible causes for this common issue...

I have an HP dv9000, Broadcom wireless card has not showed any issue since I installed Gloria, however, my wifi connectivity has turned jumpy a couple of weeks ago. Network manager shows me full signal, wifi switch is blue lit as it should, in fact, I can browse the web with relatively no problems, but Im am not able to use any apps needing for constant data transfer such as Thunderbird, Deluge, Pidgin, etc.

System monitor shows me 60 second long peaks, followed by other 60 seconds of no data transfer, then within a couple of minutes, data transfer just shows as short peaks every 30 seconds or so.

At first, i suspected my wifi network at home was becoming faulty, but I have been able to use more networks over the last couple of days just to see the problems persists.

update:

Have been able to somewhat obtain a better data transfer by removing network manager and installing wicd. However, the latter wont connect to the wifi signal after resuming from suspend.

Last thing I did was to give network manager another try, it worked, but only for a couple of days, now Im back to wicd.....

I you guys know any way of making wicd work after resuming from suspend, I just wont touch network manager ever again.

I can't help you immediately but this behavior* is starting to appear so I'll look into it for several topics in one go
*meaning in one way or the other flaky internet, but connection still there - and both wired and wifi
I think there are several factors involved, one could be too many DHCP requests
See if flushing the DHCP cache helps
sudo dhclient -r
This releases dhcp
sudo dhclient
This reconnects/renews dhcp

Thanks for the response Husse, but just didnt work out...

I'm switched to wicd until some solution comes out. Do you know how to make wicd get online after waking from suspend? It finds the networks, authentificates, but fails to obtain the IP adress.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but you'll see why in a moment

The HP DVxxxx series have a problem with the fan control algorithm in the BIOS, which causes overheating of the GPU, turning the notebook into a doorstop.
It is imperative that you update to the latest version.

I'm not sure how you'd do that under Linux, but it's pretty straight forward if you keep a Windows partition.

The overheating problem has been known to wipe out the wireless too, but I've only heard of it happening completely, not intermittently as you're describing

Well that could definately be a problem. But as I said, wireless runs okay under wicd. Should I have problems with the wifi card itself, none of the network managers should work, shouldnt they?

I will have a look on how to update the bios under Linux, since I do not have a windows partition.

On the other hand: Husse!, thank you very much for that link!, but how do I make that commands work?...I am still n00bish with that kinda stuff

I see that the post is a bit short
You make two files named and placed as described - perhaps the simplest is to open the folders as root
You copy the content below the lines beginning with File: into the files
Save and make them executable - easy to do with a right click in a "root" folder
What they do is to check if you have wicd and close it respectively open it - the file names tells Mint when to run the files
