[SOLVED] Installation Hangup (Low Disk Space)

Post by Thusspoke »

I have Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS installed on a ASUS M32 PC with a 120GB SSD.

When I try and install Linux Mint 20.1 from a DVD (have successfully installed Mint on my laptop from same DVD) it keeps getting hung up on a "Low Disk Space" error (https://ibb.co/2ZYfcwR). It give me two options, to either "Examine" or "Ignore," if I click examine it goes to a black screen with endless error text scrolling up at supersonic speeds and if I click ignore the cursor turns into a "spinning thinking wheel" and gets stuck there forever. I can get to the live session of Mint and even start to install but within a few minutes the "Low Disk Space" error appears and I can't get around it successfully to the rest of the install.

I can remove the disk and restart my PC to get back into Ubuntu and it works fine enough. When I go to the Disks utility it shows that I have tons of free space (https://ibb.co/1G5XRcf).

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Shrink or delete a partition to create unallocated space. Start the installer and choose option to install beside the existing OS. Mint should install in the unallocated space.

I have no idea how to do that, any suggestions on how to proceed?

Will this end up with both Ubuntu and Linux Mint being installed together? I only want Mint.

If Mint is the only os you want on the disk, choose the full disk during installation and let the installer do it's stuff.

I cannot get to any of those options. I click the install icon on the live desktop and it just begins the install steps and then shortly after the "low disk space" error appears and then it is all over at that point. Either continually loads or jumps to a black screen with error messages scrolling at near light speed.

You should get these steps.
https://itsfoss.com/install-linux-mint/
Verify the iso. https://linuxmint.com/verify.php#:~:tex ... 0sha256sum.
Change the USB stick.
Change the USB port.

Truly appreciate the response but I've done all that and it cannot get past the "low disk space" hangup.

(1) I have saved everything to an external hardrive. Can I just reformat the SSD with gparted live? And then try an install Mint?
(2) What file system should I use if I go that route, fat32?

Well, Thusspoke,

unless I have forgotten completely how to read and interpret a GParted screen, then GParted confirms that all your total 120 GB SSD space have already been assigned to disk partitions. Hence the verdict is right: this computer has got 0 unallocated disk space available.

Want me to explain?
  • /dev/sda1 , size 537 MB, FAT partition, how much free space is inside the partition is irrelevant, the partition has got 537 MB
  • /dev/sda2, size 111 GB, EXT4 partition, how much free space is inside the partition is irrelevant, the partition has got 111 GB
  • /dev/sda3, size 8 GB, swap space, how much swap space is in use is irrelevant, the partition has got 8 GB
111 GB + 8 GB + 0.5 GB equals almost the full 120 GB.

Ok, that's fine, appreciate it. My next question is what do I do about it? Was told in a previous post to "Shrink or delete a partition to create unallocated space" but I have no idea how to do that.

What did I do wrong? I did a search before I posted and saw nothing about "low disk space" errors in the install section. Something specific I should do/not do? Legit confused.

Hello, Thusspoke.

This is the problem with tiny 120 GB SSD's these days. They are so tiny, really really small. :(
Actually, if you want to make your machine a dual boot system,
+ keeping Ubuntu 20.04.2
+ adding Linux Mint 20.1 as second system,
then the only partition which can be shrunk is the ext4 partition on /dev/sda2, size 111 GB.
If it can be shrunk sufficiently to free enough space to hold a Linux Mint 20.1 system.

Depends on how much filesystem space is in use on /dev/sda2.
Only if it is possible to shrink /dev/sda2 by a minimum of 50 GB, I would consider using the freed unallocated space into a new disk partition /dev/sda4 and install LM 20.1 on /dev/sda4.

By the way you can only downsize /dev/sda3, after booting your machine from the Linux Mint 20.1 live system and using the live desktop.
You cannot downsize a disk partition, which is in use.

Regards,
Karl

Karl,
OP wants only Mint on the disk and not dual boot. I have given a link which explains the steps and the option to format the full disk.

That is correct.
deepakdeshp wrote: Mon Apr 26, 2021 3:56 pm I have given a link which explains the steps and the option to format the full disk.
Tried everything you linked to and I still get hung up.

(1) I used gparted live to unallocated the hard drive
(2) I used Linux Mint Xfce hoping that its lower resource requirements might help sneak by the "low disk space" error.
(3) I have disconnected the internet from the PC and attempted to skip over the multimedia download step.
(4) It is stuck with the cursor in the shape of a wheel spinning forever (been 30 minutes now) https://ibb.co/sqD2kqP
Note: I can never get to the options to format, it gets stuck with a "low disk space" error before I can ever get to that step.

I wonder why the official Linux Mint Installation Guide has not been recommended: Linux Mint Installation Guide
Following it carefully should make it pretty simple to install LM 20.1 as the only OS thus nuking and overwriting whatever is on the SSD completely: Installation type: Erase Disk and Install Linux Mint

Thanks for the reply. However, I cannot seem to get past step four https://linuxmint-installation-guide.re ... stall.html I have tried skipping it and also disconnecting from the internet, to no avail.

Either the cursor wheel spins forever https://ibb.co/sqD2kqP or it crashes to an endlessly scrolling error screen https://ibb.co/3NdYBVX. Sometimes giving a formal "low disk error" on screen before things go to pot.

Sorry, no idea what may be wrong.
In case Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS has worked correctly so far, keep it and live happily ever after.

Alternatively, you might try the ISO image Linux Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" - Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit), which is meant especially for brand new hardware instead of the normal ISO image.

Again, no idea whether you Asus qualifies as brand new. You might boot to Ubuntu, execute the terminal command inxi -Fxxxz and share the output with us, which the command will display.
Please, no screenshot of the inxi output. It is pure text. Please, mark it with your mouse. Press <Ctrl><Shift>C to copy it and paste it into your next reply.
This will give a concise overview of the technical details of your Asus machine.

Friend of mine who works in IT told me to:
(1) Download a fresh installation of Linux Mint onto USB drive to install (mine was a few months old)
(2) Go to my (UEFI) BIOS and disable "PCI Express Native Power Management" he said something about a conflict between my ASUS M32 and Mint

Worked like a champ and installed without errors. Thanks all who offered help. I do greatly appreciate it.

Cheers,
