This seems to be somewhat troublesome with Linux in general: controlling the (cpu) fan speed. I recently bought a new mainboard with a not quite satisfying fan control via bios, so I switched to manual control and installed software solutions. While there is one excellent software for Windows - Speedfan - that gives the user complete control and a good interface, for Linux there seem to be only command line tools. Unfortunately they have one major flaw: Due to the missing interface it is difficult to identify the sensors that are connected to specific fans. Also I only found solutions for binding one sensor to one fan speed - ignoring the fact, that my dual-core cpu has to sensors with different temperatures.
Now I managed to reduce the fan speed to an acceptable noise, but it doesn't adjust to the temperature. I wich there would be a tool just similar to speedfan, where you can adjust the fans easily by mouseclick to see which sensors react... Would be great not only for Mint.

Yes for speed based on sensor temperature , so not entirely complete user control
I don't know why people think they even need this
Sometimes the motherboard provides fan control, sometimes the computer case provides the connectors and temperature sensors to enable that control, such as Asus qfan
--unless you were an over-clocker, which I understand has diminished in popularity, since processors now come prepared to over-clock..

--lm-sensors the speedfan equivalent in Linux, then add your gui front-end (for lm-sensors) of choice (Gkrellm or conky ) or some other choice..

But that's what I meant: a temperature based speed. I already tried all that tools you've posted there and was able to slow the fan speed down - but it remains at low speed all the time, no matter how much the cpu is stressed. This looks dangerous. I get confused while configuring lmspeed & co, because the temperature readings seem to be false. It is hard to say, which sensor readings are the correct ones. Especially because there are two sensor readings for my cpu - it has two cores - and I couldn't figure out how to bind the speed to both readings instead just to one of it. The configuration of lmspeed is difficult, so I'd like to have a (gnome) gui for it. Is there such a tool?...Speedfan - that gives the user complete control..
