You may need to provide more information. You said trying to install, so the live CD worked, and this problem happened after you installed from the live cd and then rebooted?
What graphics does the laptop have: ATI or Nvidia?

Note: I recall that Clem had indicated that Live-CD beta024.iso is essentially Mint 3.0, so this may help get you started in the right direction.
