why so slow?

i am dual booting mint and windows vista and the other day i had to use vista for something and i noticed that vista actually ran faster than my mint, and i found this really awkward. in comparison to vista, mint actually starts up programs way slower. can any one help me out. i am running the main gnome edition on a computer with 512 mb ram, and an amd sempron 3400+ processor, so im not fully sure if i am running the right version. also my mint is installed in an extended partition while my vista isnt, could that be a reason for why it is so slow. please get back to me as any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

If you installed Mint using Mint4win it
is going to run slow.
If you installed it as a standard dual boot
system on it's own partition, then it
should out perform Vista.It doesn't make
a difference if it's on a primary or extended partition.

Your video driver could be an issue though.
It would help to know what we are troubleshooting,
so could you run this command and post the output.

Vista always opened programs very fast for me too.

I would say that's normal, especially if you use Vista's sleep or never power down due to the way Vista caches the programs you use into the RAM.

would getting the 64 bit version make a difference in speed, or would it not work on my processor?

The reason Vista loads app fast is because it loads the program into your memory before you use it. Vista uses statistics from what you have used to do at a specific time and day of the week. So if you launch a game like World of Warcraft every day at around 18:00, Vista knows this and the program will then be cached into your computers memory before you use it.

• it will be automatically be added to your boot bootup processes and will preload your most commonly used applications to enable fast program loading. it intelligently looks at the programs you use and determines which ones to preload and how many, based on your available memory. its benefits improve after you've been using your machine a while and it learns which programs you use most often
