No, we can't. There's nothing wrong with the word newbie. The forum is called "Newbie Questions" after all.

Well I disagree with the title as well. Why can't they be "Questions for the Novice" or simply just "Novice Questions?"

With all due respect, I think you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. If the term "Newbie" upsets you, I suspect you are in for a pretty rough ride in any of the Linux forums I am familiar with.

That's not to say it isn't insulting and quite possibly rude to have ever began with. Also it doesn't mean nobody shouldn't do anything about it either.

I'm not a native English speaker (but my English is pretty good as reading this forum will tell you)
Newbie is simply the term for someone who is new - noob is another one but that's far more slang and possibly a bit insulting (not sure)

This is correct. I must say I agree with Fred also.

Hi,

I was asked by email to intervene on this. Having said that, I see nothing wrong with the word "newbie" myself. At most, it's "cheeky"? but certainly not insulting.

I would have an issue if people started to be elitist and if some people were rejected from the community as a result. This is not the case however and I have no problem with the word itself as long as it's not used as an insult.

I consider myself a "n00b" when it comes to many things and I certainly don't have any issue with it.

Finally, I'll just underline the fact that this "Newbie questions" forum describes itself with the sentence: "All gurus once were newbies". So that clearly emphasises the fact that we're talking about the temporary lack of experience novice users have and that in no way connotes that they would be "stupid", or anything insulting.

Beware a linux user who stylizes himself a "guru!" It is okay for others to label someone as such, but to label yourself? Hmmm...
