I don't like the word newbie and find it a little insulting actually. Can't we use something more like recruit, or associate, or novice user? I would like to note that my feet are wet and I can navigate throughout Linux and accomplish tasks with a little research if any at all.Kaye wrote:Hello newbies,

No, we can't. There's nothing wrong with the word newbie. The forum is called "Newbie Questions" after all.ozzy24 wrote:I don't like the word newbie and find it a little insulting actually. Well I disagree with the title as well. Why can't they be "Questions for the Novice" or simply just "Novice Questions?"

ozzy24,
With all due respect, I think you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. If the term "Newbie" upsets you, I suspect you are in for a pretty rough ride in any of the Linux forums I am familiar with.

That's not to say it isn't insulting and quite possibly rude to have ever began with. Also it doesn't mean nobody shouldn't do anything about it either.Fred wrote:ozzy24,

I'm not a native English speaker (but my English is pretty good as reading this forum will tell you)
Newbie is simply the term for someone who is new - noob is another one but that's far more slang and possibly a bit insulting (not sure)

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it

This is correct. I must say I agree with Fred also.Husse wrote:I'm not a native English speaker (but my English is pretty good as reading this forum will tell you)

Political correctness is getting more than a little out of control.

Nicely put. I think I'm going to drop this whole thing. Just interested in some opinions that's all.Kaye wrote:noob is another one but that's far more slang and possibly a bit insulting
Re: Discussion about newbie
I split off the posts about the linguistic value of newbie into a new post and moved it to the general chat section

Hi,
I was asked by email to intervene on this. Having said that, I see nothing wrong with the word "newbie" myself. At most, it's "cheeky"? but certainly not insulting.
I would have an issue if people started to be elitist and if some people were rejected from the community as a result. This is not the case however and I have no problem with the word itself as long as it's not used as an insult.
I consider myself a "n00b" when it comes to many things and I certainly don't have any issue with it.
Finally, I'll just underline the fact that this "Newbie questions" forum describes itself with the sentence: "All gurus once were newbies". So that clearly emphasises the fact that we're talking about the temporary lack of experience novice users have and that in no way connotes that they would be "stupid", or anything insulting.
Clem.

Re: Discussion about newbie
Most of us would probably consider ourselves noobs.
Beware a linux user who stylizes himself a "guru!" It is okay for others to label someone as such, but to label yourself? Hmmm...

Re: Discussion about newbie
If we eliminate the 'newbie' forum, I won't be able to answer any questions! I figure that if the question isn't in the 'newbie' forum, then I'm completely unqualified to help

We could go completely PC and have a Mint Challenged forum....
