Graphic garbage after installing Nvidia driver

Post by Tom for Linux »

Hi Yall! Proud to be a Linux user for a year now and for the rest of my life..., I've experimented with a bunch of Linux releases and my favorites are Ubuntu and Mint, I fell in love when I was experimenting Ubuntu and I had to configure a D-Link Wireless AP and found out I could Telnet the little thing, surprise! it was running BusyBox so I logged in with a (googled found default password) and typed (iwconfig) VOILA! I had all the information I needed to crack it and configure it for my client without reseting it and stopping all the users (thanks to Linux know how)...

Enough about me

I managed to cure all of my setup problems and did almost every thing I wanted with Linux on different PC's to this date, (with the terrific help of your forum) but today I've been working on installing Mint 8 on my TANK (Intel PIII, 1GHz, 2GB ram, ASUS CUV4X fully loaded PC) in fact the problem is with the video card, it's a Nvidia GForce 6200 with 128Mb ram, I managed to install the recommended driver (version 185) and I set up my twin monitors without a glitch, I noticed the problem when I started to play around with the (candy for the eyes) desktop features, I noticed that some times garbage appears in some of the windows bars and letters disappears from text menu, when I move the mouse over the garbage graphic or the lost letters it comes back to normal.

I know it's not a big issue but I'm a perfectionist, and I haven't found that problem on the net so I singed up and here I am!

Sorry for the long intro... next time I'll be short and sweet ha!

Thank's for the reply... but now it's time to be short and sweet... (been there, done that)...
I got it working... it's just not working to perfection
I've tried different Linux (Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Mint, Debian) still the same problem, worse with older versions (mouse residue when moving), I think it's more of a BIOS problem or a conflict with another PCI card, (next test is to pull out all other PCI cards and re-install) I'll let you know the results...

1- PCI Lava 4 port USB card
1- PCI ATI TV tuner card
1- PCI Sound Blaster Live card
1- PCI Promise SCSII ultra 320 card
1- AGP GeForce 6200 card
and one old ASUS CUV4X mother board with a 1GHz intel PIII CPU, and 2Gb of ram

Tolled ya it's a loaded old machine ha! but it's a TANK (almost indestructible)

actually what I would like is if someone could point me to a good software to test my video card, something that tests everything (ram, GPU, IRQ conflicts, etc...)

For testing video performance something like displaymate
http://www.displaymate.com/altos.html

Linux..
In terminal, check
  • Dmesg
--will display any PCI irq issues
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/l-hw2.html
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-disp ... -hardware/
  • hwinfo
http://www.kriyayoga.com/love_blog/post.php/384

Mint
inxi
--you may need to install this

Thank's DRHU this is very interesting I will study the command outputs and the web sits to put me on the track, but I was hoping for a native, app. to test my card's performance instead of third party like DisplayMate (but it's worth considering)

If it helps I'll call you Dr. Hu... ha!
