[Solved] Install LDME5 encrypted

Post by Cosmos2 »

By reading a few posts it looks like its possible. I am failing to do so.

Got Elsie on a Ventoj stick, can boot the live version, prepare network and a terminal, set up an encrypted partition holding a LVM for / and swap, and an unencrypted /boot, efi installation. Terminal still is open, luks is opened, LVM enabled. Devices are shown in /dev/mapper. The procedure is based on https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/System_verschl%C3%BCsseln/ (from the German Ubuntu Forum) and worked with Vera. I am using German as locale, keyboard etc.

When I start the installer and select manual partitioning I do not get any other than the disk partitions, the logical drives in /dev/mapper are not shown and selectable.

What is wrong?

I believe the LMDE 5 installer will do what you want, when you are on the install pager, select the disk, check use LVM, check encrypt disk, then enter your passphrase, and the installer will do the encryption for you.

Just install Debian encrypted or on raid or whatever you want, add lmde sources, convert to lmde

No, sorry, the LDME installer won't allow the classical full disk encryption with unencrypted /boot. It just allows to encrypt /home. And there is no switch to an Expert mode.

The manual preparation of a LVM in a luks container is not recognized either. It works with plain Mint 21.1 Vera, not with LDME. Nevertheless, your btfrs example viewtopic.php?p=2295828#p2295828 gave me the required information how to get an expert install. No need to remove the link, this was exactly what I needed... :D

LDME5 Elsie is installed now.

I removed my link because I didn't know if you wanted to use btrfs or not and I didn't want to lead you down a wrong path. Anyway Congratulations on your successful install...
