Microphone not working properly on Asus Zenbook

Post by Crls »

Hello everyone.
I've been using linux mint for over a year now and this is the first problem I don't know how to solve. My microphone has a lot of white noise. Before it worked just fine but now it's unusable. I don't know if its a hardware or a software issue. I'm using an ASUS Zenbook with linux mint 21. I tried lowering the channels with pulse audio tool but that didn't fix the problem. I also tried reinstalling the microphone driver but I didn't find any information on how to do that.
Here is the output of inxi -Fxxxrz:

Code: Select all

Audio:
Device-1: AMD Renoir Radeon High Definition Audio driver: snd_hda_intel
    v: kernel pcie: speed: 8 GT/s lanes: 16 bus-ID: 04:00.1 chip-ID: 1002:1637
    class-ID: 0403
  Device-2: AMD Raven/Raven2/FireFlight/Renoir Audio Processor
    vendor: ASUSTeK driver: N/A pcie: speed: 8 GT/s lanes: 16 bus-ID: 04:00.5
    chip-ID: 1022:15e2 class-ID: 0480
Device-3: AMD Family 17h HD Audio vendor: ASUSTeK driver: snd_hda_intel
    v: kernel pcie: speed: 8 GT/s lanes: 16 bus-ID: 04:00.6 chip-ID: 1022:15e3
    class-ID: 0403
  Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k5.15.0-67-generic running: yes
  Sound Server-2: PulseAudio v: 15.99.1 running: yes
  Sound Server-3: PipeWire v: 0.3.48 running: yes
And here is the output of lspci:

04:00.6 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Family 17h (Models 10h-1fh) HD Audio Controller

Please help, I need the mic for videocalls.
Thanks for your time.

I have the same issue.

Different laptop, but also an Asus (Asus Zephyrus G14 - 2020 model) that I dual boot Linux Mint and Windows on.

Sometimes if I boot in Windows and then make sure the microphone is working and then restart into Mint, it can work, but it's not consistent and sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

I've checked out pavucontrol (Pulse Audio Volume Control) , but none of the selected options work for me.
They are:

Code: Select all

"Analogue Stereo Duplex"
"Analogue Stereo Output"
"Analogue Surround 4.0 Output + Analogue Stero Input"
"Analogue Surround 4.0 Output"
"Analogue Stero Input"
For my `inxi -Fxxxrz` output, please see below:

Code: Select all

System:
  Kernel: 5.15.0-69-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 11.3.0

Not certain what steps I can do to ensure my laptop's inbuilt microphone is working every time?

I note that I have the same inbuilt microphone device as @Cris :

Code: Select all

Device-4: AMD Family 17h HD Audio vendor: ASUSTeK driver: snd_hda_intel
Sorry if I'm missing something obvious and thanks in advance for any help!

I have already fixed the problem. In my case it was really easy. My microphone sensibility was too high. In my mic settings sensibility was set to 100%, to fix it I just lowered to something like 30%. This was messed up by the keyboard shortcut that turns on the mic, it sets the mic to 100% by default.

I hope this helps someone.

I can't find where the "sensitivity settings" are?

Please see my screenshot image below from pav:

On the regular Sound Settings, there's "Volume" but even with that 100% the inbuilt microphone gets no reading.

Not sure where this "sensitivity setting" is on pavucontrol (Pulse Audio Volume Control) ? (Also on pavucontrol , I exprimented with adjusting to max all three knobs but to no avail.)

Is there some sort of additional tool I could get to adjust this?
