Linux mint 21.1 mate freezes /I5

Post by Gs974 »

Hello !
I have installed Linux mint 21.1 mate on my computer and it freezes after a while. Just to install the OS, I had to do it many times. I remember that during the installation of the previous version, I had some problem like this. I remember that it probably has something to do with some kind of microcode for the CPU.
Just before booting the OS says:

[ 0146005] x86 CPU: VMX (outside TXT) disabled by BIOS
[ 0146009]] x86 CPU: SGX disabled by BIOS

Please help, I don't know what to do.

Those aren't serious errors, more warnings really.

I had the VMX (outside TXT) disabled by BIOS error when I first installed MX (Debian based) on my main Linux box. Easy workaround was to go into the BIOS menu and enable VMX.

You can do the same with the SGX disabled by BIOS error.

This assumes those options are in your BIOS menu of course.

If that doesn't work post some useful info, copy/paste the text output of inxi -Fxxxrz run in the terminal.

Hello!

Thank you so much.
I've tried to change the VMX and SGX in my bios, but no such luck. I just couldn't find them.

Therefore, here is the result of what you asked:

Hello there!

Strangely enough, I've let it run without doing anything and it didn't freeze even if It went twice into sleep mode. However, when I use Firefox or I use LibreOffice, it does.

This is very strange.

I helped someone who had issues installing an earlier version of Linux Mint where there were having lots of freeze issues. It ended up being a BIOS/UEFI setting.

If this is the correct link Product Support For TUF GAMING B460M-PLUS (WI-FI), the latest version is 1601 and indicates it "Improve system stability". So do a couple of the other ones it appears your system does not have. You might want to consider updating.

Machine:
Type: Desktop System: ASUS product: N/A v: N/A serial: <superuser required>
Mobo: ASUSTeK model: TUF GAMING B460M-PLUS (WI-FI) v: Rev 1.xx
serial: <superuser required> UEFI: American Megatrends v: 1101
date: 01/15/2021

Another possibility is there may be issues with the nouveau driver. It does not always like resuming from suspend on some GPUs. If you have your computer set to automatically suspend after it has been idle, that may be why it appears to freeze. However, first check the BIOS/UEFI.

Hello there!

Everything was done alright, except that at the address you gave I did not get the right file. So I had to go and get the file at this address :
I am going to test the system now and will tell you later.

However, many thanks for telling me what to do.

You could also try a newer kernel. The 5.19 kernel is available in Update Manager.
Instructions for upgrading to the 5.19 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.19 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
Do you specifically want to use the open-source graphics driver? Installing the proprietary Nvidia driver may help, especially considering the apps you mentioned which seem to be problematic.

Hello !

I would like to thank you again for the time spent trying to solve my problem. I am writing from my laptop because the system is not stable enough for me to finish writing this message.

I have changed the CMOS battery, since I cannot see any mention of the BIOS update that I have made in the BIOS itself and the system time also seemed bizarre somehow.

Strangely enough, the systems seems more stable with the nouveau driver for my graphic card...until I open Firefox. Withe the recommended Nvida package installed it doesn't even finish booting more often than with the nouveau driver.
Moreover, the system gives me one less message during boo with the noveau driver, since I've managed to enable both SGX of MVX in the BIOS.
However, SGX is stills shown as being disable by the BIOS probably because I can only put set it to "auto" and not enabled.

I think that I should ditch the video card altogether, but haven't been able to boot the computer without plugging another video cable.

I am seriously considering reinstalling the 20.3, but fear it would be the same problem. I guess I should have chosen an AMD processor. Things would have been better with Linux. There is no way for me to go back to Windows though.

I am going to see if the new kernel resolves my problem. I will tell you what happens afterwards.

You can boot from live Mint 21 .1 and test it's performance.
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help.

I don't know what "bizarre" system time means. Once you boot the operating system, time is usually checked against network servers.

Saying the system is more stable until you actually use the graphics card doesn't seem to indicate nouveau is more stable.

You can ignore the messages related to SGX. It's not an error or a problem. It's just a message telling you the state of that setting.
Gs974 wrote: Thu Mar 23, 2023 4:58 amI think that I should ditch the video card altogether, but haven't been able to boot the computer without plugging another video cable.
The CPU you have does not have onboard graphics. You need to have a video card.

If it is a new motherboard, you probably will have to re-install Windows to determine if there is a problem with the board so you can RMA it.

Hello!

I would like to thank you for your advice.

I was so angered with the whole stuff keeping me awake nearly in the wee hours, that I went to the local computer seller and bought a new motherboard, with a new CPU, a new hard drive, a new video card and a new case...only to become aware that it was the installer on the USB key which is corrupted somehow.

Therefore, I downloaded Cinnamon 21.1 and installed it on the new computer.

However, I am going to start reinstalling that version of Cinnamon on the former system.

I'll keep it as a reminder never to get angry again when dealing with computers. I will also start learning more about Linux and its command.

I'll get back to you as soon as I finish the job I had waiting to be completed via the computer.

Thanks a lot again.
