e1000e issue after update to Mint 21.1

Post by janosch »

I am experiencing a networking issue after the update of my system. I used to run Mint 20.3 for quite some time where the nic was working fine. Then I updated to Mint 21 and directly on to 21.1 without noticing the issue in between. It might have been introduced by either step.

The problem is that after each boot, my wired network interface is unusable, while the wifi interface is working fine. Relevant log excerpt:

Code: Select all

[ 2.102149] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 eth0: (PCI Express:2.5GT/s:Width x1) 28:d2:44:ac:5b:a2
[ 2.102156] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 eth0: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection
[ 2.102200] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 eth0: MAC: 11, PHY: 12, PBA No: 1000FF-0FF
[ 2.103323] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 eth1: renamed from eth0
[ 40.752776] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 eth1: NIC Link is Up 10 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: None
[ 40.752784] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 eth1: 10/100 speed: disabling TSO
[ 40.752933] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth1: link becomes ready
Why would it come up "10 Mbps Full Duplex" at first? The wired network card won't get an ip address in that state, network manager shows a "busy circle" icon in the notification area. I can fix that by unplugging the network cable and reseating it, which leads to the following log lines:

Code: Select all

[ 114.428617] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 eth1: NIC Link is Down
[ 124.187014] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 eth1: NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: None
How can I further investigate this issue?

I have this same interface. Under Network Connections | Wired Connection 1 | Link Negotiation mine's set to 'Ignore' and it's working fine. Perhaps try 'Automatic' and then forcing 1000Mb as a last resort?

Something else I've witnessed is idle ports going into low-power/standby mode, falling back to 10Mb, then not waking up quickly enough to properly negotiate the link speed -- I'm referring to whatever network device is on the other end. Can that port become fixed at 1Gb?
