Squashfs error at initial reboot

Post by fab161 »

Hello everyone,

today I installed Linux Mint 21.1 Cinnamon and everything went fine. I gave LM the entire disk and followed the default partition options. However, I had some problems with the initial reboot afterwards -- and actually, this is not the first time I experienced those after a Mint installation: When the system prompted me to do so, I removed the installation medium (an USB flash drive) and pressed enter. Then the reboot stopped and the fans of the laptop spun up. Because of that, I pressed 'esc' to review the shutdown messages. The following squashfs errors were displayed:

Code: Select all

SQUASHFS error: Unable to read data
and

Code: Select all

SQUASHFS error: Unable to read page
At the beginning and end of those messages, some numbers/data were given. However, I couldn't read those, as the text kept scrolling.

Do you know, where those errors could have come from? After I hold down the power button on the laptop, Mint booted fine and seems to work now as it should. As I mentioned, this is not the first time I experienced those errors on this particular laptop. Past installations with this error worked fine as well. Is this something I should worry about?

Before I installed, I verified the installation media with the sha256sum.txt and sha256sum.txt.gpg files. To flash the image, I mounted the USB stick and the run the following command:

Code: Select all

sudo dd bs=4M if=IMAGE of=/dev/sdb
Afterwards, I synced with the 'sync' utility and ejected the USB flash drive. Everytime I install a GNU/Linux distro nowadays, I follow this flashing procedure. In a nutshell: The image was valid and the flashing went fine.

Re: Squashfs error at initial reboot

Mh, kinda sad that there are still no replies on this thread. I wonder if nobody else encountered this issue before...
Probably I should try out the new release to see if something changed in that regard.
