Network problem after OS update (solved)
Recently updated HP Envy 17 laptop from Mate 19.2 to 21.1. Sha sums checked, install completed w/o problems, new system runs as expected, but now the wifi connection with the router is compromised. I did not change any elements or settings on the LAN, but there is minimal to no wifi connection with the laptop at one of the most common locations used in the house. Previously at this location, wifi was reliably adequate. At this location an ethernet cable is available, and displays the internet as expected. Elsewhere the wifi is strong enough to display the internet. Signal strength checked using smartphone which shows adequate signal everywhere in the house.
Possibly of interest is that the router, Actiontec furnished by Verizon, has added the laptop with the new OS as a new device, see s/shot. Laptop now represented as 2nd, 4th, and 5th listings, I assume the listing 192.168.1.10 is the added device. Could use some wisdom here.

Please edit first you screenshot, your IP address is visible. Moreover try to delete your wifi's SSID and add it back again.

AFAIK that data is not usable to anyone without being logged into the router with user i.d. and password.Midnight True wrote: ⤴Sat Mar 25, 2023 9:36 pmPlease edit first you screenshot, your IP address is visible. Moreover try to delete your wifi's SSID and add it back again.

Re: Network problem after OS update
i was referring to your IPv4 address. Perhaps you are using random mac address on network manager?Slowpoke47 wrote: ⤴Sun Mar 26, 2023 6:23 am

Re: Network problem after OS update
There is no wifi device showing. I expected to see two devices, e.g.
Given from what you said wifi worked in LM19, stumped and now beyond my competence level
EDIT - are you dual booting? Is secure boot disabled in BIOS, if not disable it.
Code: Select all

1st question, no. 2nd question, yes

Re: Network problem after OS update
Next attempt to find it,
Would not expect to find it there, most are pcie devices, so
shows the ethernet and wireless controller.
Also try
From memory, LM19 was a 4.15 kernel, so no quick and easy way to install that kernel in LM21 (which is a 5.15 kernel) as a test.
lsusb
, on my desktop (has a usb wifi dongle) shows up as:
Code: Select all
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:8179 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188EUS 802.11n Wireless Network Adapter
lspci
. In one of my thinkpads:
Code: Select all
00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection (Lewisville) (rev 04)
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak] (rev 34)
Also try
dmesg | grep error
see it found the device but failed to load it.From memory, LM19 was a 4.15 kernel, so no quick and easy way to install that kernel in LM21 (which is a 5.15 kernel) as a test.

Re: Network problem after OS update
My attempt to use the dongle resulted in a setback. First prompted to install drivers, I think that went ok. But the dongle did not connect by default to wifi and my attempts to make a connection resulted in multiple "networks" being offered, none of which connected either. In photo 1168, I did figure out how to delete all but the operational entry, seen on photo 1169, but I don't know what if anything I need to add to that pop-up. Currently, no wifi at all.
Re: Network problem after OS update
We still don't know what dongle you are using. With it plugged in, post:
Code: Select all

Re: Network problem after OS update
Ok, so you have a driver, but it doesn't seem to be working:
Device-3: Ralink RT5372 Wireless Adapter type: USB driver: rt2800usb
IF: wlx9cefd5fbdcb3 state: down mac: 9c:ef:d5:fb:dc:b3
What does this tell us:

IF: wlx9cefd5fbdcb3 state: down mac: 9c:ef:d5:fb:dc:b3
What does this tell us:
Code: Select all
rfkill list && iwconfig && mokutil --sb-state
