[SOLVED] Rhythmbox freezing my computer?

Post by mintybarrels »

I've just swapped my entire system over to a new SSD.

The clone didn't take - kind of buggy. So, I just went for a full re-install.

It seems to be working fine - with the only exception being that when I'm listening to Rhythmbox it will stop working after a few songs, and when I return to my computer nothing seems to be working except the mouse.

Any suggestions on how I can troubleshoot this? Or, will I just have to completely reinstall... AGAIN?

Thanks,

MB

ED* The problem was a faulty SSD - ADATA XPG FURY ... junk, don't buy.

see that section above surrounded in pink ( virtually impossible to miss) and that blue font and link called how to get help, click it. Step 5 talks about one way to post your system details which we need some info involving how Linux Mint sees/deals with your hardware.

Rhythmbox has never caused any of my systems to freeze in my 12+ years of using it regardless of the hardware, but that's just been my experience.

if you prefer the gui way...

1. Windows logo aka start button on your keyboard, type without quotes " system reports"
2. "System information" button in upper left, " copy " button bottom right.
3. Come back here. paste into the reply white area

This won't provide any personally identifiable info so no worries

I ended up just doing a full re-install anyways.... about the 3rd time I've done it in the past 48 hours - I'm getting good at it!

But, yes, if anyone can tell me why my system is hanging/freezing from time to time, would be great.

Since I have 40GB of RAM, I decided not to put a swap file on these latest installs.

Other than that, I'm using the same kernel that was working great before I switched drives...

What else....?

Thanks for your help,

*nods appreciatively * :) It's cool. Just know that System Report usually covers 99.9% of everything so it's always a solid choice.

If you're up for a reasonable challenge that will let you post/prep your system details faster from now on. I made a turtorial here viewtopic.php?t=386621

You may need to adjust the " sleep " numerical values to something larger depending on your system.
, I decided not to put a swap file on these latest installs
It automatically creates swap space ( 2GBs last I recall), but you also have the option to change that amount.

That's a good attitude to keep. I've had to do clean reinstalls often throughout the years. I didn't learn how Linux worked overnight or even over a week either. I used it off and on for now over 12 years and switched 100% July 28 2020 and couldn't be happier overall. I'll try to get back to you later today. It's family day and laundry day for me.

How do I change the sleep values?

Just change the number to a different number.

If you need further help on this. please post a comment on that link I gave you so we can keep the conversation coherent to the topic involved. Mods, understandably, want to keep things coherent.

I don't think it was an issue of not being Linux compatible, I have yet to find any storage drive that wouldn't work with Linux save for the exception of not being formatted to EXT4 ( which is what is the common dime a dozen format type )

That ssd isn't very old either. That has me scratching my head. (shrugs). I usually stick to Samsung 860 and 870 evo for sata ssd's . Unsure of the best m.2 ultra pci express ssd's yet, but my corsair 4TB mp600 pro has been solid so far for this entire year.
