Hello, I experienced the Black Screen after applying all updates in 21.1. I did an erase and fresh install to get back working order.
I've read other articles in the forum, and it seems to be a problem with one or a combination of the following:
1) the kernel update
2) the video driver getting changed during updates
3) the renderer getting changed during updates
I wasn't clear what the fix turned out to be on the other posts?
My question is which of the three should I avoid when selecting updates to apply,
to avoid the black screen?
Thank you,
=R=

Welcome to the forum, rawd.
There are a multitude of possibilities in addition to the ones you listed and it is not possible for anyone to answer that question until you provide information about your hardware.
Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Re: Black Screen After Applying All Updates in 21.1
I did a search on the forum for
D630
and there are quite a few people currently running LM21.1 on them. The issues seem to be mainly with wifi, but those machines had Broadcom and yours has Intel. I didn't find anyone having graphics issues (not even those with Nvidia GPUs in theirs) so I am not sure what might be the issue on your system. Intel graphics very rarely have issues. When you booted to the black screen, did you have the laptop screen turned off and were just using the external monitor? I suggest you make sure both screens are being used while troubleshooting because the issue might relate to the connection for the external monitor. I have seen some issues with the older hardware and external monitors in LM21 versions.
In cases like this, the recommendation is to take a Timeshift snapshot and then installing the updates in small groups. As long as the updates are successful, you can either keep track of what you are updating or periodically take additional snapshots until you find which update might be the issue.
However, I would strongly recommend you either find more memory for the laptop or switch to using MATE or Xfce. This is not enough memory to be running an LM21 version of Cinnamon.

You could try increasing the swapfile size to see if that will help, but I think you will still likely to have performance issues. How to Increase Swap Size on Ubuntu Linux
Web browsers are getting only more and more hungry in how much memory and processing power they use and Cinnamon is the "heaviest" desktop.

Re: Black Screen After Applying All Updates in 21.1
Hi, Thank you very much for the quick replay.
Glad to hear the Dell D630 users aren't experiencing very many issues. My WiFi is working
I do have the laptop in a docking station connected to an external monitor. So might be the problem?
I'll check into to the external monitor causing Black Screen issue. I did a print screen of the list of updates offered in update manager. I plan to apply them one at a time, and reboot after each one. All though, time consuming it'll let me know which one if any cause the Black Screen issue.
Yeah, I know you right I need to add more Ram Memory, So, I'll get some ordered.
Appreciate you help!
