Area51m R2, Issues and Problems, Incuding duel graphics, Fans RGB Lighting and Tobii Eyetracker

Post by Cletus »

Hi All.
I thought I would start a separate topic for any one else who wants to run Linux on their Alienware Area51m R2 laptop.

Code: Select all

Specs:
Kernel: 5.19.0-35-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: N/A Desktop: Cinnamon 5.6.8 tk: GTK 3.24.33

(this info can be found in: System Reports. system information)

So Installation went smoothly and most things seem to work.

First Issue:
I have noticed the Screen Brightness works with the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (open-source) Driver, But not with any of the nvidia drivers. The Screen Resolution doesnt work either.
Does any one have a fix for this yet? I haven't managed to find anything in the discussion boards that work yet.
Have updated Kernel to 5.19.0-35

Hello and welcome! That's not quite how we work here. This topic is for you, and your issues. If anyone else has issues, they should start a topic of their own.

If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!

Hi Cletus, Welcome.

Also, it does no service to erase parts of the system-info. It might be a disservice actually.

But with the info that is shown, it looks like your cpu is doing quite a workload. I can't see the rest of the system report to possibly see if there might be some obvious reason for that. It might be normal, given whatever unknown condition there is, but more than likely it's not.

Hi
thanks for your comment.
Fare enough about the separate topic for each issue Moem, I'll do that in the future.
Sticking with the graphics driver issue that I raised, can you recommend some trouble shooting for the screen brightness not working? ( I can adjust the brightness up and down, and the sliding bar goes up and down, but the brightness of the screen does not change).
This is just using the latest nvidia driver.
The screen resolution is also not able to be adjusted.

I have updated the kernel and all updates.

Can't Ajust Screen Brightness, Can't ajust Screen Resolution

Post by Cletus »

Hi All
I've just converted back to linux after several years dealing with windows.
I'm running an Alienware/Dell Area 51m R2

I have checked all updates are installed and latest kernel.
I don't know what to do next.

Screen Brightness: the bar moves, but the brightness does nothing.

Resolution: is greyed out and I cant change it

thank you for your help

Please generate an overview of your system like this:

- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);

- Make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;

- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxpmrz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter, and don't omit the space after inxi!)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Is there an option in the BIOS/UEFI for setting which GPU to use? If so, what settings are available.

It's a bit unusual to see both i915 and nvidia listed as the GPUs.

What is the output of

Code: Select all

xrandr --verbose

Yeh it's a laptop, with 2 graphics cards

I went through some tutorials on troubleshooting a week ago and the nvidia graphics card is number 0 and intel is no 1

Theres the output:

Code: Select all

If you do not tell us what "tutorials on troubleshooting" you did, there is no way for us to know.

I help people with graphics issues on a regular basis and we do not use the terms "number 0" and "number 1" so you'll also need to explain what those represent.

I asked you if there is a setting in BIOS/UEFI and I do not see where you answered that question. Often one setting will be Discrete while the other is Hybrid or Switchable, but the names vary based on the manufacturer.

If there is a setting, I need to what the setting was when you ran xrandr --verbose. That output can change if the BIOS/UEFI setting is changed.

The output from xrandr is not showing a connection to eDP which is often the laptop screen. Are you using the laptop screen? If so, then it would mean DP-0 is the laptop screen and it seems to be currently connected to the Intel GPU.

Hi SMG
I'm still learning all this stuff, so I probably didn't interoperate what I saw properly.

Ok the Bios says:
Integrated Graphics: Intel (R) UHD Graphics 630
Discrete Graphics 1 Nvidia G3Force RTX 2080 Super
Discrete Graphics 2 none

eDP and the output form xrandr is completely new to me, but I think I understand what your saying. So the nvidia graphics isn't being selected at all. is that rite?

so it would be relying on the default connection?

I don't think I remember seeing the laptop's display panel named DP, but either LVDS or eDP.
Since the inxi output lists the Nvidia OpenGL driver is doing the graphics rendering, then you must have enabled only Discrete Graphics in the BIOS, which is possible on high-end gaming laptops. Is that correct?

Looking at the specs for the Alienware Area-51m R2 laptop, it's display panel has an optional Ultra High Definition 3840 x 2160 native resolution, and the NVIDIA GPU supports one HDMI 2.0 port and one mini DisplayPort 1.4.
https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/alienware ... _en-us.pdf

You said in your first post that The Screen Resolution doesnt work either. Did you mean it can't be changed in the Display program or in the NVIDIA X Server Settings utility?

If that is true, then I assume the laptop originally had Windows installed and were you able to change resolutions?

Hi Robin

I have the UH Definition screen you mentioned.

I have never been able to find any options to change the gpu order in the BIOS.

When I go to display it is set at 3840 x 2160 and it greyed out, so I cant change it.

I read a post about people having dimilar issues: viewtopic.php?p=2054545

I tried going through the
sudo apt remove --purge *nvidia*

and run sudo apt-get install nvidia-prime-applet
After this i restarted and it booted in to a black screen. I had to restart in safe mode and it reverted back to the opensource driver.

After playing a bit with the Nvidia x server settings, I finally realised that there is an option in the bottom right of the tool bar.
If I hover over it with the mouse I can select either;
Active profile: Nvidia (performance mode) - this one is greyed out
Switch to: Intel (power saving mode)
Switch to :Nvidia on demand)

I tried selecting the switch to intel mode and nothing changed.
Than after a restart, again I got the black screen and had to reboot in to safe mode to get it back again.

That's as far as I've gotten.

Also, if I use the opensource graphics driver, I can dim the screen and change the resolution (but I dont think the Nvidia graphics card gets used)

The only other way I know it can be done - if switching is even possible on this laptop or it is completely controlled by Windows - is if there is an external switch, but the Setup and Specifications guide didn't mention that.

You didn't reply if the Nvidia Settings utility listed other resolutions and were other resolutions available in Windows.

Try using the command sudo prime-select inteland reboot.

Manufacturers keep making changes to how they design and wire laptops so I can only make guesses when I don't have that laptop (and I don't, but it looks really cool).
Cletus wrote: Sat Apr 01, 2023 12:51 amOk the Bios says:
Integrated Graphics: Intel (R) UHD Graphics 630
Discrete Graphics 1 Nvidia G3Force RTX 2080 Super
Discrete Graphics 2 none
According to the Alienware manual page 81, the discrete 1 and 2 are because there can be two different discrete GPUs placed in the laptop. I don't see where there is a setting for a hybrid option (ie. switchable graphics) so it would seem your computer is more like a standard desktop where you either run onboard graphics or you run a discrete GPU.
Cletus wrote: Sat Apr 01, 2023 12:51 ameDP and the output form xrandr is completely new to me, but I think I understand what your saying. So the nvidia graphics isn't being selected at all. is that rite?
There are different options for making dual graphics laptops. In some cases both GPUs are wired to all screens. In other cases only certain GPUs (not both) are wired to screens. And in even a different case, there is a switching mechanism which can change to which screen a GPU is wired.

At this point, my guess based on the BIOS information is both GPUs are wired to your laptop screen and your laptop does not have switchable graphics in the sense of an Optimus-style laptop.

We have seen some laptops (which I think were AMD/Nvidia, but I don't recall if they were Alienware) where in one BIOS mode the laptop screen showed as being eDP, but in the Nvidia mode the laptop screen was DP. That is why I wanted to know which mode you were in.

At this point, I don't think there is an option to change order. As I read it, I think the option is to change which GPU is being used. What options did you have when using Windows?
Cletus wrote: Sat Apr 01, 2023 12:03 pmI read a post about people having dimilar issues: viewtopic.php?p=2054545
I think that is a different situation than yours because of your laptop's hardware configuration.
Cletus wrote: Sat Apr 01, 2023 12:03 pmAfter playing a bit with the Nvidia x server settings, I finally realised that there is an option in the bottom right of the tool bar.
If I hover over it with the mouse I can select either;

Probably because your computer was only using the Nvidia GPU and the nvidia driver do not load in Intel mode.

There are known issues with Nvidia drivers and being able to adjust brightness with drivers newer than the 470. :(

Just to remind every one the issue is not being able to just screen brightness and that the screen resolution is greyed out in the Display settings.

I have worked out that I seem to be able to switch between the GPUS using the nvidia server settings.
this tool also seems to be able to use that to change the screen resolution.

So the screen Brightness works when the opensource driver is installed.
Perhaps the brightness not working is because of this Nvidia controller?
If it is stepping in and taking control of the display settings, perhaps that is why?

I dont see any options in it to a just brightness.

I can use it to switch to the intel gpu, but I still have the same issue with brightness, so I dont think it is an issue with which card is being used.
or the settings on the linux mint side of things. It has to either be the nvidia driver or the controller app that it automatically installs.

Having said that, I have know ida of how to go about checking this.

Oh, I tried the command sudo prime-select intel and then rebooted and had a boot issue, and had to go back to safe mode

Just to be clear, using the Nvidia Settings utility:
1. You are able to switch to other resolutions instead of 3840 x 2160? What are they?

2. What resolution do you want to use?
The info I extracted from the monitor's EDID from the xrandr --verbose output only lists 3840x2160.

3. You can switch to Intel mode? To check if that is true, would you switch and then post the output of
inxi -Gxxx
Switching modes using Nvidia Settings, the nvidia-prime applet in the system tray or the command sudo prime-select intel should all work the same.

4. What is the output of ls /sys/class/backlight/*/*

Hi roblm

1. Well, I'm still getting to know the nvitia utility, but I seem to be able to change the resolution to any in the selection, but the scaling doesn't work, and so even changing it from 3840x 2160 to 2560 x1600 any windows I have open begin to get cut off.

2. I usually use 3840x2160 , but I have a couple of older monitors that need a lower resolution.

My biggest problem in not being able to dim the screen brightness, it hurts my eyes!!! I end up putting on sunglasses for any white screen like these boxes.

3. After switching to intel mode using the nvidia tols, logging our and back in, then runing inxi -Gxxx
