Cinnamon Desktop broken since upgrade to Kernel 5.15.0-69

Post by understater »

Hi,

today (2023.03.28) my Cinnamon Mint PC got an Update to new Kernel 5.15.0-69.
Update finished as usual with the recommendation to reboot, what I did. System booted well until the moment when I pressed return after my Password.
There is only a black screen and the usual messages popping up in the right lower corner (like "Network is up" etc.)
I used [ALT] + [F2] to start that tiny command window and hit "r" to reboot cinnamon. That brought at least the Windows of the auto-stared Apps on the screen, however: taskbar, background, desktop icons, applets, desclets etc. are still not working.
Fast fix was to activate the grub menu and to boot into the old kernel. (Good idea to have another PC and the ssh server running on my Mint-PC)
PC setup is like:

Where can I find the cinnamon logs?
Anyone with similar problems?

Only a full inxi -Fxpmrz output is adequate information. No selections.

Sorry, didn't noticed that in the rules. But I'm still worried about giving so much information.

Nothing alarming in the inxi output, as far as I can see.... Although a complication might arise because of you having an encrypted file system and a rather smallish /boot partition. Space shortage might occur. But I have no experience with encrypted systems, so I'll leave it at that.

It might simply be a quirk in the -69 kernel, which affects your particular hardware combination. I recommend to blacklist the -69 kernel in Update Manager and to wait for the next kernel update.

Alternatively, as you have rather new hardware, you might try a kernel from a newer series:
Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels
Install the latest kernel of the 5.19 series. Then reboot and test.

Thank you Pjotr!

I will blacklist the kernel. If I run into the same problem on an other, less needed, system I will try the 5.19 kernel solution. Up to now 2 of 3 of my computers had no probs with the new kernel.

To all who might experienced similar:
Problem seems to be solved without further action from my side.
Boot with older kernel worked fine for the rest of the day. About 6 hours later that day, the PC got updates for the docker environment, according to the update logs.
Today I booted the PC, but missed the grub menu. So the PC ran into kernel 5.15.0-69 and , surprise! : cinnamon worked fine.

Sounds like a docker issue, not a Cinnamon or kernel issue.

There's no need to be. If you read the output carefully, you'll see that it says <filter> here and there. That's where the parameters of the inxi command are removing risky bits of information.
