[ SOLVED ] Error message with Google Earth updates

Post by mIROUZ »

Hi,
I do all my updates. Everything's good. Then I install Google Earth. And then after when I refresh the updates I have this message (translated):
Failed to download all index files

The repository no longer appears to be available or cannot be contacted due to network issues. If an older index file exists, it will be used. Otherwise, the deposit will be ignored. Check your network connection and fix the deposit address in the preferences.

GPG error : http://dl.google.com/linux/earth/deb stable InRelease : The following signatures could not be verified because the public key is not available : NO_PUBKEY 4EB27DB2A3B88B8BLe dépôt http://dl.google.com/linux/earth/deb stable InRelease is not signed.
Is this issue known ?

Google Earth upon its installation creates its own software source list so it can be updated by regular means (apt)
But the build in repos is old and its authentication key expired.
Next logical step is to download latest LInux build from Google official download page. Install it with GDebi installer. It will -hopefully- solve the expired key problem and Google Earth will be getting updates normally from now on again.

At least this is a warning and not a "catastrophic" error
Maintainers of Google Earth are being lazy.
Read this tutorial on fixing warnings like the one you're getting.

Well there is always an error message in any case, even applying the solution.
At the same time the tutorial offers a solution for PPAs. And I installed a .deb

Eventually I'll be done with the error message.
Do you think it's better if i install Google Earth from the repos ( Even if it is older ) or from the .deb ?
Since we are told that this problem will be solved in time with the updates of the source processes...

Got it. The remedy proposed on that thread to this warning is not exactly the most user-friendly.

I would say keep the latest build since despite the apt-key deprecation warning it is working.

Just check for updates on their download page from time to time.

If the warning does annoy you, you can go to "Software Sources" and remove the Google repo for now (you'll find it in "Additional Repositories").
It won't affect the functionality of the already installed application.

Alright, i just wanted to get your opinion.
I would have preferred since the deposit but if you tell me to prefer the .deb i will do as you say.
I don't mind either message since i know the problem now. And it works very well.

Thanks again MIZoG.

That is what I do just remove the check.
If software is working, I don't need any stinking update.

Yes i may even uncheck it eventually.
It's true Google is a bit anti-linux but there is no such good opensource map.
Even OSM doesn't have so many interface tools except in OSMand.
Otherwise I would have preferred but too bad... let's go for google.

Thanks !

Just a curiosity .
I realize i have a BRAVE deposit. However, i never installed it.
Do you think it's possibly a dependency of another of my installations ?
