SOLVED No HDMI output with Intel Graphics Iris

Hi

I have a XMG Focus 17 laptop.
i7-12700H with Intel Iris Xe Graphics
Nvidia RTX 3060.
Dualboot LinuxMint 21.1 / Windows 10
Kernel 5.15.0-67-generic


HDMI output (2nd screen, TV) works fine with :
-Windows
-LinuxMint with Nvidia card activated

BUT
don't work with :
LinuxMint with Intel Graphic GPU.
I have the same pb on another laptop DELL VOSTRO 5630 (no Nvidia, only Intel GPU), running LinuxMint 21.1 too.

So the issue comes from the Intel Iris GPU.

Has someone any clue to solve this ?

I have a late model HP lap top with the iRISxe. The laptop has a dual boot configuration using Windows11 and Linux Mint 20.3. Using LM20.3 the iRISxe did not have a driver, and I had to install the 5.15 kernel. I cannot remember the LM21 default kernel version. If you run the inxi -bG command, it should indicate driver state and kernel version.

It may or may not be the same issue. Different hardware can often mean a different issue is the source of the problem.

If you are using the 5.15 kernel, which is too old for 12th-gen Intel to have all the proper support, on both laptops then that might be the common factor (presuming both laptops have the same 12th-gen Intel CPU).

Please upgrade to a 6 series kernel. You can install the latest 6.0-oem kernel with

sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04b
and reboot.

If that does not work, please provide the output of

It appears this may be a set-up where Nvidia does not have any ports directly attached to it and Nvidia is just used for rendering. A number of newer laptops are being designed this way. However, the command roblm requested is the way to know for sure.

SMG wrote: Tue Mar 28, 2023 9:48 am It appears this may be a set-up where Nvidia does not have any ports directly attached to it and Nvidia is just used for rendering. A number of newer laptops are being designed this way. However, the command roblm requested is the way to know for sure.
I have the issue only when graphics are rendered by INTEL integrated GPU (Nvidia OFF). When I switch to Nvidia (optimus), HDMI works fine.

You said in your first post that the HDMI output (2nd screen, TV) works with the Nvidia card activated. Would you switch to On-Demand mode and post the output of xrandr --verbose

This info from xrandr --verbose shows the laptop's screen (eDP-1) is connected to CRTC 0. All display devices are assigned a CRTC. We know that screen is connected to the Integrated Intel GPU. The CRTCs available for the Intel GPU are 0,1,2 and 3. If the HDMI port was connected to the Intel GPU, then it would have been assigned CRTC 1, 2, or 3.

However, the second xrandr --verbose output, with the Nvidia GPU enabled, shows the HDMI port has been assigned CRTC 4. That can only come from the Nvidia GPU, which has been assigned CRTCs 4,5,6 and 7.

So you can't use the HDMI port with only the Intel GPU enabled. The inxi output can sometimes be confusing and even wrong.

thanks Robim for your explanation.

On my first laptop (XMG Focus 17 GPU IrisXe and Nvidia 3060), the solution is to switch to the nvidia card.
But that means that on my second laptop (DELL vostro 5630 i7-1360P, GPU IrisXe), HDMI will never work ? :shock:

You are making a wrong assumption here. Just because both use Iris technology does not mean they are wired the same way. A laptop that only has one GPU must have its ports wired to that GPU. Your XMG Focus 17 laptop has two different GPUs which means there are different options which can be used to wire the external port to a GPU.

The data you just posted shows the difference between only having Intel enabled and then having both Intel and Nvidia enabled. Notice in the second case there are additional ports showing which are not showing in the first case.

With only the Intel GPU activated :

Notice only for the second case is there an HDMI port listed. That means you must have the Nvidia GPU enabled to be able to use the HDMI port.

Your Dell laptop has different hardware (only one GPU). I suggest you create a new topic for it and we can take a look at what might be needed to get the HDMI port working.
