Cannot upgrade from Una to Vanessa

Post by Maglin »

When I tried (twice) to upgrade from Una to Vanessa, everything worked perfectly until the final phase of
actual installation. Then I got a message that there was an error detected in the upgrade process and
"1779 packages still need to be updated (0 kept, 21 deleted)"

The second time, I opened a new terminal and typed:

Code: Select all

sudo apt --fix-broken install
and this yielded a duplicate of the last portion of what the failed installation process displayed:

Code: Select all

  libgconf-2-4 libxcb-xtest0 python-is-python2 python3-ibus-1.0

Not knowing how to fix this, at this point I restored Una from Timeshift but so far am unable to successfully install Vanessa on my laptop.

Thanks for any suggestions?

I never ever do a version upgrade because you run into trouble and then waste time trying to fix it. In the end you end up wiping it out and installing fresh.

I would backup your home directory and then wipe everything clean and do complete install.

I have no problem with minor upgrades.

Well, though reinstalling all my applications and configurations is not trivial, I suppose your suggestion (do a fresh, clean install) is the most practical solution.

Does this mean I should now mark my problem [SOLVED] by adding that word to my subject line?

Thanks so much,
Mag

If you follow my advice and reinstall from scratch then come back and post what solved your issue and then mark it solved.

Most people that run into problems when trying to just take the easy wide path of an in place upgrade spend way too much time trying to solve problems than what its worth. In the end they either live with their problems or do a complete reinstall.

Hi, JerryF.

As the topic is about upgrading from LM 20.3 to LM 21 Vanessa, you may have this document in mind: https://linuxmint-user-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/upgrade-to-mint-21.html
Correct?

[SOLVED] Re: Cannot upgrade from Una to Vanessa

Post by Maglin »

Installing Linux Mint Vera directly from a USB drive (bypassing Vanessa) solved all my installation problems and errors.

Minor updates seem fine as upgrades yet this is not the first time I've had to reinstall from scratch in order to convert to a major upgrade.

Thanks.
