[SOLVED] foxcloneV50 clone doesn't boot.

Post by NoHo Hank »

With foxcloneV50 cloned the os, LM 21.1 cinn, on a laptop from an HDD to a SSD (SATA) The SSd was connected by USB port. Clone drive to drive.
Clone seemed to be succesfull. Nonetheless SSD doesn't boot when swapped with the HDD.
In liveboot the SSD and its contents are reachable.
How gett he cloen on SSD working?

Um, very little info here. Win / dual boot? Which notebook?
At least boot Mint live and add both "Disks" screenshots with HDD and SSD selected.

Maybe the UEFI being used is not on the SSD, but instead on the HDD you are replacing with the SSD??

foxcloneV50 copies everytthing to the 2nd disk. So wonder about that. But how to check?

I think I know what source of the problem is, the new way the mint installer installs legacy boot with a gpt partition table and bios_grub partition. Exactly what has gone wrong would require some testing*.

Boot your mint install stick (or boot from the old drive) open a terminal and efibootmgr. If it says EFI variables are not supported then you are booting legacy, anything else is UEFI boot. I want to confirm you are booting legacy.

If it is booting legacy...

With the new drive in, boot your mint install stick, open a terminal and

Code: Select all

sudo mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
sudo grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sda
From your gparted screenshot sda3 is your / partition. Change if different. This should re-install grub.

If that doesn't work, I'm stumped.

* I don't think I ever tested this setup, when I first released foxclone legacy boot with a bios_grub partition was not mainstream, bit on the fringe.

YES spot on! Absolutely wonderful!

Code: Select all

mint@mint:~$ efibootmgr
EFI variables are not supported on this system.
mint@mint:~$ sudo mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
mint@mint:~$ sudo grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sda
Installing for i386-pc platform.
Installation finished. No error reported.
mint@mint:~$
It is a quit old machine andit shows there is no uefi onboard.
Thanks a lot AndyMH ! :D

Glad it worked!

I'll now have to try and figure out why? At the moment all I can think of is that it isn't copying the bios_grub partition correctly (but it should). Not going to commit to a date for the fix.

This is an example of how the distro devs can make life difficult for the likes of me. I wasn't convinced about the "improvements" to "erase and install" legacy boot with LM21 (and it will be ubuntu 22.04 as well). Sigh :(
