Thanks for your help. You, of course, never faced a learning curve. Never been out of your comfort zone.AndyMH wrote: ⤴Sun Mar 26, 2023 4:19 pmSometimes I despairSlowpoke47 wrote: ⤴Sun Mar 26, 2023 10:43 am EDIT - are you dual booting? Is secure boot disabled in BIOS, if not disable it.

Curious about your internal card. If it now works, you might not need the dongle.

No clue re "internal card", must have missed that lecture. Actually, that laptop has now found the wifi signal without the dongle, and in fact I haven't managed to coax the dongle into action. Don't need it now, that's for some other day.
Re: Network problem after OS update (solved)
This is your internal wifi card which I assume now works:
Device-2: Realtek RTL8821CE 802.11ac PCIe Wireless Network Adapter
Just a guess, but maybe the internal card blocks the dongle:
Device-3: Ralink RT5372 Wireless Adapter type: USB driver: rt2800usb
Anyway, glad you have wifi now.

Anyway, glad you have wifi now.
Thanks, as you have seen my under-the-hood skills are somewhat rudimentary.
Friend of mine suggested a possible secondary issue- said that as a laptop gets older, the wifi antenna could become weaker. This machine came to us a couple of years ago as "refurbished", a squishy descriptor. Actual age unknown. On purchasing it, replaced the W10 OS with Mint 19.2 which is now almost out of support. Don't recall any wifi or login issues then. Still some minor bugs, hoping to resolve them myself.

Re: Network problem after OS update (solved)
OP here. Turns out a wifi driver was missing. Driver installed, good connection restored.
