HP printer problem

Post by David1293 »

Hi all
My printer (HP Photosmart 7520) worked just fine with Mint (Mate) 19.
Now, it reports printer is busy, powered down or unplugged.
I have it connected via wifi.
This doesn't make sense to me. How could it be detected if it was powered down or unplugged?
I've tried switching off and restarting.
It also reports ink levels as unavailable, again something that worked fine with Mint 19
inxi _Fxzd gives me:

I don't have experience with this printer but according to this ...

https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... ease_notes

... you need the HPLIP 3.22.10 driver.

Go to your printer and print out a report - We want to see the network settings. Then you want to check on the computer if those are right.

A lot of times what happens is people setup a printer via wifi and after a while the ip address of the printer can change. Then the computer cannot find the printer. The real fix for this is to go into your router and either tell the router to reserve the ip address for that printer or change the printer ip address on the printer to use an ip address outside the range of the routers DHCP service. This way it will not ever change.

The quickest fix I find for this is to go into printer management and delete the printer and add a new printer. Have it discover it and then install it.

If that is not working then we work with the current ip address of the printer from the printed reports page from the printer and setup using ip address.

Probably because HPLIP was set up correctly.
Now, it reports printer is busy, powered down or unplugged.
I have it connected via wifi.
Possibly because HPLIP was not set up correctly, but I do not intend to investigate HPLIP. Instead, give outputs for

Thanks for the replies.
Sorry I haven’t replied sooner- I’ve been ill, enough to lay me low for a few days. So, I decided to delete the printer, then add it via a USB connection. I got the following from Coffee412’s suggestions.

I can't delete the printer via admin. It won't turn off, unless I unplug the power lead.

I tried to install the other driver, but got an error message.
I still get the same error message in HPLIP.

Execute this command:

Code: Select all

lpadmin -p Photosmart7520 -v "ipp://Photosmart%207520%20series%20%5B987CF3%5D%20(USB)._ipp._tcp.local/" -E -m everywhere
Test printing with

Code: Select all

lp -d Photosmart7520 /etc/nsswitch.conf
How's that?

Hi
Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I get the following:

lpadmin -p Photosmart7520 -v "ipp://Photosmart%207520%20series%20%5B987CF3%5D%20(USB)._ipp._tcp.local/" -E -m everywhere

lp -d Photosmart7520 /etc/nsswitch.conf
request id is Photosmart7520-4 (1 file(s))

The printer starts to print, but then leaves the paper half-way out.
I don't know if this tells you anything useful.

Both commands complete successfully.

A big step up from not printing :).

Have you tried printing from applications?

Hi
Thanks again for the reply. Yes, I tried printing from a LibreOffice Writer document.
It started to print, then stopped without completing.
I don't know if this helps. The printer is quite old, but it's not seen much use

I noticed the outputs you gave earlier had a few concerning lines:
ERROR: ippfind (PID 5503) stopped with status 2
Failed to resolve service 'Photosmart 7520 series [987CF3]' of type '_ipp._tcp' in domain 'local': Timeout reached
These appear to be communication issues, but the cause might not be easy to track down. Run these commands a few times:

Code: Select all

ippfind -T 5

Code: Select all

ippfind
